MOUNT PLEASANT, S.C. – Despite
Dixon Black's 200
th career hit and
Tyler Hare's two home runs, the Wofford baseball team was unable to complete its late comeback Sunday afternoon at Patriots Point, falling the series rubber match 11-7 to the College of Charleston. The Terriers drop to 13-4 on the season, and Charleston improves to 12-6.
Â
Terrier starter
Braden Hofmeyer (3-1) suffered the loss after surrendering three runs (two earned) over 1.2 innings.
Kenny Michaels was the first of five arms out of the bullpen, and he was one of two to deliver a scoreless outing. Michaels allowed no runs or hits over 2.1 innings with a walk and three strikeouts. The freshman matched his career bests for innings and punchouts.
Sam Stratton,
Dom Marcoccio and
Champ Davis combined for the next 1.1 innings before Mount Pleasant nativeÂ
Branton Little finished off the game. Little tossed 2.2 innings of scoreless ball in is hometown with only a hit and two hit batsmen against his ledger.
Â
Cougar starter Connor Campbell (3-0) tallied the win with 5.0 scoreless innings with three hits and three walks.
Â
Tyler Hare led the way offensively with two hits, both of which were home runs. It is the first multi-homer game of his career and the first by a Terrier since
Dixon Black's two long balls against Michigan State last March. Hare's six RBI are a new career high with four coming off a grand slam, the first by a Terrier this season. The junior now owns seven homers on the campaign.
Â
Andrew Mannelly recorded the other Terrier RBI in the game. Among the 10 Terrier hits, four went for extra bases. Two of those were Hare's four-baggers with the others being doubles by
Brice Martinez and
Ryan Wynn.
Â
One of the most notable base knocks was Black's early single, the 200
th hit of his career. The senior has an even split of 100 hits each between his time at Monmouth and now Wofford.
Â
Charleston struck first in the bottom of the first. After loading the bases, back-to-back RBI groundouts made the score 2-0 in favor of the Cougars.
Â
A bases-loaded bit by pitch with two outs would grant Charleston a third run in the following inning, but
Kenny Michaels took to the mound and immediately struck the next batter out to limit the damage. Charleston led 3-0.
Â
After a pair of scoreless frames, Charleston added two more runs with a two-run double in the bottom of the fifth. Entering the sixth, the Cougars led 5-0.
Â
The margin stretched to 11-0 after Charleston plated six more runs in the bottom of the sixth.
Â
But Wofford began its comeback quest in the top of the seventh, refusing to quit.
Tyler Hare lifted a two-run home run to right field to cut the score to 11-2.
Â
After holding Charleston in the bottom of the seventh, the Terriers got back to work at the plate in the eighth.
Andrew Mannelly's RBI single pushed a run across, and later the bases were loaded for Hare. The junior played long ball again, depositing a grand slam over the right field wall to continue to cut into the deficit, making the score 11-7.
Â
But Wofford ran out of innings. The Terriers were unable to score in the ninth, falling 11-7 to Charleston.
Â
Wofford plays one more road contest with its midweek match-up at Georgia on Tuesday, March 19, before returning home this coming weekend. First pitch against the Bulldogs is set for 5:00 p.m. in Athens, and the Terriers will then play host to The Citadel over the weekend to begin Southern Conference play.
