Baseball Downs Lafayette 14-2 in Series Opener

Hare’s homer and Black’s five RBI pace Wofford to victory

SPARTANBURG, S.C. – The Wofford baseball team continued its offensive ways Friday night at Russell C. King Field with 12 hits en route to a 14-2 victory over Lafayette. The Terriers improve to 10-2 and lead the weekend series 1-0 while Lafayette drops to 1-10.

Wofford starter Mike Eggert (3-0) notched the win with 6.0 innings of work to match his career high. He allowed two runs on five hits and a walk with eight strikeouts. Eggert's eight punchouts are a new career high and tie for the most by a Terrier pitcher this season with Zac Cowan's eight against FDU. Dylan Rhadans was first out of the bullpen with 2.0 scoreless innings of work, allowing only a hit and a walk. He struck out five batters. Mason Compton tossed the final inning, also scoreless, with no hits or walks.

Lafayette starter Mike Romano (0-2) suffered the loss with seven runs (six earned) allowed in 3.2 innings.

Eight Terriers recorded a hit in the contest, led by a trio with multiple. Dixon Black paced the squad with three hits and five runs batted in. Those five RBI are a career high and the most by a Terrier this season. Brice Martinez and Jack Renwick each tallied two hits. Martinez drove home one run, and Renwick pushed across two. Tyler Hare tallied three RBI, two coming from his one hit: a two-run home run, his fifth of the season. Marshall Toole had one RBI, and though hitless, Andrew Mannelly tallied one RBI and worked a walk.

A quarter of Wofford's 12 hits went for extra bases. Alongside Hare's homer, Black notched a triple. Renwick and Tyler Bak both clubbed doubles.

The scoring opened with a four-run first inning, beginning with Dixon Black's RBI triple. Black scored on Andrew Mannelly's sacrifice fly. Later in the inning, Tyler Hare slugged a two-run round-tripper to center for the early 4-0 lead.

Hare struck again in the third, lifting his own sacrifice fly for a 5-0 advantage.

Lafayette got on the board in the top of the fourth with a two-run home run to cut the margin to 5-2. Wofford responded quickly with two runs in the bottom of the frame to offset. A Black sacrifice fly was followed by Brice Martinez knocking an RBI single, pushing the lead to 7-2.

Four more runs in the fifth put the game out of reach. Renwick doubled home two runs, and Black worked a bases-loaded walk. Mannelly's RBI groundout made the margin 11-2

After a couple of scoreless innings, Wofford added three more in the eighth. Another bases-loaded walk, this time worked by Marshall Toole, then gave way to Black striking again with a two-run single. This made the score 14-2, where it stood after Mason Compton shut the door in the top of the ninth.

The squads will face off again tomorrow for game two of the series. Note that the scheduled first pitch time has changed to 5:30 p.m. from its original time of 2:00 p.m. due to forecasted inclement weather.
