MORGANTON, N.C. – It was a stellar two days for the Wofford women's golf team at App State's Mimosa Hills Intercollegiate Monday and Tuesday with the Terriers placing second, aided by a trio in the top 10 as paced by
Lilli Horn's runner-up finish. Three more Terriers placed in the top 20 at the Mimosa Hills Golf and Country Club, a par-72, 6,130-yard course.
Wofford was neck-and-neck with fellow SoCon foe Western Carolina throughout the duration of the tournament. Both squads posted an opening 304, and Wofford concluded day one with a 300 in round two. The Catamounts were only one stroke better to hold a slight edge of a single shot entering the final round. The Terriers put forth a 295 on the final day, but the Catamounts were again just one stroke better. Wofford's final score of 899 is tied for its best of the season (Golfweek Red Sky Classic), but Western Carolina was two strokes ahead to claim the crown in the seven-team field. Despite this, Wofford secured its first runner-up finish since the 2022 Southern Conference Championship.
The Terriers owned the second-most pars (157) and birdies (31) in the field. Western Carolina was the only squad better in both marks. Wofford was one of only three programs to tally an eagle in the event, and it was the only one by a non-individual player.
Lilli Horn was the top Terrier in the event, posting a 6-over 222 to tie for second place. After opening on day one with rounds of 72 and 80, Horn sat in a tie for seventh entering the final round. But she surged on day two, posting a career-low round of 70 to move up five spots into her first-career runner-up result. The finish is the first top-five of her career and her fourth top 10. Horn was the best player in the field on par 5s with a score average of 4.58. She added an eagle on the final day, one of only three registered in the tournament and the only one by a non-individual player. Her eight birdies tied for third most in the field.
Horn fell just short of the low medalist, Western Carolina's Elizabeth Lobhauer with her 218 at 2-over. Horn came within four strokes of the lead in the 45-player event. She is the first Terrier runner-up since teammate
Bella Kent placed second in early March of this season at The Puerto Rico Classic. This is first time a pair of Terriers have garnered runner-up results in the same campaign since 2022 when
Lindsey Hollis (Islander Classic) and Becca Earl (SoCon Championship) both tallied second-place finishes.
Bella Kent tied for fourth in the event with her rounds of 76-74-74, posting an 8-over 224. Kent was only one stroke off the lead after day two, and with her consistent play in the final round the freshman secured her third top five and fourth top 10. Kent's eight birdies tied for third most in the field.
Maggie Jackson rounds out the trio of Terriers in the top 10 by placing exactly in 10
th. Jackson opened with an 83 before rebounding on the back half of day two with a 70. Her final round 76 gave her a score of 229, 13-over. Her 70 in round two is tied for her career-low round. This is Jackson's third-career top 10.
The other two members of the Terrier lineup also placed in the top 20.
Taylor Burch finished in 15
th after carding 233 at 17-over. She tallied rounds of 77-76-80 en route to her second-career top 20 and the best finish of her career, topping the 20
th-place result from the 2022 Terrier Intercollegiate.
Lindsey Hollis rounds out the Wofford lineup in a tie for 18
th. Hollis posted scores of 79 and 81 on day one before finishing with a 75 for a 19-over score of 235. This is the 11
th top 20 for Hollis in her career.
Two Terriers competed as individuals in the event, led by
Sofia Pedrero. She is the sixth Terrier in top 20, the most of any team in the field. Host App State placed five in the top 20 with the champion Catamounts only putting four in the top 20. Pedrero's outing is the best of her young career as the freshman placed in a tie for 11
th with a 15-over score of 231. Both her score and score in relation to par are new career bests, and this is the first top 20 of her career. She opened with a career-low round of 73 before shooting 79 in each of the final two rounds.
Regina Parra rounds things out for Wofford in a tie for 35
th, the best finish of her Terrier career. She carded a 246 with rounds of 79-81-86.
This was the penultimate event of the season for Wofford. The Terriers wrap up the campaign in two weeks with the 2024 SoCon Championship. It will be a three-day event running from Sunday, April 14, to Tuesday, April 16, at the Moss Creek Golf Club in Hilton Head, South Carolina.
