SPARTANBURG, S.C. – On Monday, the Southern Conference Football Players of the Week presented by Southern Recognition were awarded for all games played on Sept. 14. Furman quarterback Trey Hedden was named the Offensive Player of the Week, Wofford defensive back
CJ Coombes was named the Defensive Player of the Week and Paladins kicker Ian Williams was named the Special Teams Player of the Week. The awards are selected by the league office.
Coombes, a second-year freshman from Bellefonte, Delaware, led the Terriers in tackles with 13 on Saturday against #13 William & Mary. In the fourth quarter, he recovered a fumble that had been forced by
Isaiah Wadsworth. The Terriers would convert the turnover into a touchdown that tied the game at 21-21 with ten minutes left in the game.
This is the first career Player of the Week honor for Coombes and he is the third straight Wofford defensive player to be honored this season. The four total SoCon Player of the Week honors in 2024 are the most in a single season by the Terriers since 2017 (eight).
After the open week, Wofford will host #14/16 Mercer on Saturday, September 28, at 1:30 p.m. at Gibbs Stadium to begin SoCon play.
