Elizabeth Navola Named SoCon Defensive Player of the Week

SPARTANBURG, S.C. – The Southern Conference announced its weekly women's soccer awards on Tuesday afternoon, with Wofford's Elizabeth Navola tabbed as the SoCon Defensive Player of the Week. The awards are selected by the league office.

Navola, a freshman from Davidson, North Carolina, picked up two clean sheets this week, shutting out UNC Asheville in a 2-0 win and drawing USC Upstate 0-0. In the 2-0 victory at UNC Asheville, Navola recorded a career-high seven saves on the night. A product of Christ the King in North Carolina, Navola delivered four saves in the 0-0 draw at USC Upstate for her second clean sheet of the week.

"As a freshman she has really came in and made her mark," said head coach Elissa Post. "She is understanding our style of play and what we ask of our back line and has done an incredible job vocally, even as a freshman, leading our back line and our team. She has gone above and beyond what we have asked, so I am really proud of her."

After the two performances last week, the freshman goalkeeper boasts a .955 save percentage, ranking her fourth in the nation, first amongst all freshmen and first in the SoCon. Navola holds a steady .222 goals against average which places her tenth in the nation, first amongst all freshmen and first in the SoCon as well. The two clean sheets this past week move her up to three on the season, good for 49th in the nation and third in the conference.

With last week's selection of Ines Obradovac as offensive player of the week, this marks the first time women's soccer has had back-to-back players of the week since 2000 (Amanda Berman - Sept. 25, Faith Stewart - Oct. 2). The program has earned two players of the week so far this season, the first season to have two winners since 2004. This is the first-career player of the week selection for Navola.

The Terriers will open conference play at 6:00 pm on Thursday against Chattanooga at Snyder Field. The team will then travel to the lower state on Sunday for a road contest against The Citadel.
