SPARTANBURG, S.C. – The Southern Conference announced its all-tournament teams upon the conclusion of the 2025 Ingles SoCon Women's Basketball Championship yesterday, and Wofford's
Helen Matthews was honored on the first team.
Â
She becomes the first Terrier to ever earn all-tournament recognition three times in a career as Matthews also garnered the recognition in 2021 and 2023.
Â
Matthews went on a legacy run to conclude her Terrier career, as the fifth-year senior captain returned to the court after missing three games with an elbow injury. Still battling the injury, Matthews played with a brace on her left arm that immobilized her elbow. Playing with practically one arm, Matthews averaged 16.5 points per game over Wofford's two contests. She totaled 13 rebounds at an average of 6.5 with seven assists, a block, and a steal. She shot 43.3 percent from the floor and 33.3 percent from three.
Â
In the quarterfinals against Samford, Matthews posted 20 points with five rebounds, three assists, and a steal. She led the team in scoring again against UNCG in the semifinals, netting 13 points with eight boards, four assists, and a block. She played all 40 minutes of the game.
Â
Matthews, a native of Kaiapoi, New Zealand, closed her Terrier career in a gutsy, hard-fought fashion. She cemented her legacy as a Terrier with a First-Team All-SoCon honor this season, returning from a season-ending knee injury that cost her the prior campaign. Before that, Matthews was a SoCon All-Defensive Team member in the 2022-23 campaign in which Wofford won the SoCon regular season title. Over five seasons in Spartanburg, Matthews has been a part of 85 wins, making her the winningest individual player in program history. With a powerful conclusion to her career in Asheville, Matthews has helped set a standard for the program that will be felt for years to come.
