About the Opponent: UNCG Spartans
UNCG hits .247 as a team with 29 home runs clubbed. Jeremy Wolf paces the offense with a .365 average, seventh in the SoCon. Parker Wight is the Spartan home run leader with seven, and his 18 RBI top the team. UNCG has hung its hat on pitching this season, despite a team ERA of 5.68, which ranks fifth in the SoCon. The Spartans boast three shutout wins on the season, tied for most in the conference while also touting the best strikeout-to-walk ratio in the league at 2.63. The Spartans issue just 3.61 walks per nine innings, a rate that is second in the conference to only Wofford's mark of 3.35. Jay Miller's 3.80 ERA is best on the squad and third in the SoCon, and he paces the league with 51 punchouts. Sam Murchison leads the team with four pitching wins, one shy of the conference lead. In Layman's Terms
James Layman has patiently waited his turn at Wofford, and now he is shining. Layman did not see action as a freshman and played sparingly last season. As a junior in 2025, he is breaking out with a .420 batting average, .555 on-base mark, and .520 slugging clip. Layman is fifth in the conference with 18 stolen bases. Getting on base however he can, albeit even the painful way, Layman is third in the SoCon with 13 hit by pitch. The junior leads the conference in batting average and on-base percentage, and his three sacrifice flies are tied for seventh. His on-base clip is 10th in the nation with his average 25th. He adds 42 total hits, including eight doubles and a triple. He has 24 RBI with 35 runs scored and 21 walks. Layman played hero in the series finale against Elon, clubbing a walk-off two-run double to secure the series win. Layman has been the most consistent Terrier at the dish, currently touting a 12-game hit streak and 20-game on-base streak, both of which are highs for any Terrier this season. Layman is chasing history with Wofford now in the back half of the season, as he can become only the third Terrier with a qualified .400 average in a season during the program's Division I era (since 1996). Lawson Hill was the last to do so, hitting .467 in the 2020 campaign that was untimely cut short due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Only once in the program's D-I era has a Terrier hit .400 in a full campaign, Brandon Waring's .401 clip in 2007. If Layman can sustain his average, he has a chance to make program history.

Cleaning Things Up
With many Terriers successful at getting on base and applying pressure to the defense, a trio are reaping the benefits and clutching up to clean things up. Three Terriers -
David Wiley,
Tanner Hardin, and
Ryan Wynn - own much better batting averages with runners on base than with the bases clear. Wiley hits .386 (27-for-70) with runners on compared to .231 (12-for-52) with the bases empty. Hardin improves his average from .208 (5-for-24) to .341 (15-for-44) when runners get on for him. Wynn sees a jump from a clear average of .260 (20-for-77) to a .391 mark (25-for-64) with runners on. Wiley boasts the best average on the team (minimum 30 at-bats) with runners in scoring position, hitting .429 (18-for-42). Layman is hitting .359 (14-for-39) with Wynn adding a clip of .302 (13-for-43).

SoCon Success
The Southern Conference slate of play is when teams need their players to step up and provide their best performances, and a few Terriers are already off to excellent starts to league action.
James Layman is hitting an astounding .556 in six league games, boasting 10 total hits with two doubles, three RBI, and three runs. He has walked four times, posting a whopping .652 on-base mark and .667 slugging clip. Freshman
Tanner Hardin is hitting .333 in his first taste of conference play, and
Tyler Hare posts a .320 average. On the mound,
Carter Rasmussen has yet to surrender an earned run in his two appearances. In 3.1 innings, he has allowed just a single unearned run while holding the opposition to a .200 average with a pair of punchouts to no walks.
