Spartanburg, S.C.- Wofford's softball team (28-17, 9-5 SoCon) split the first two games of a three-game series against Chattanooga (32-12,9-4 SoCon) on Friday, April 18 at Hope Field. Wofford lost a nailbiter in game one as the Terrier bats fell short in a 3-1 loss. In game two, the Wofford offense came alive to go along with a Margaret Axelson gem to win 6-1.
Game One
Abby Greenwood got the start in game one to face Chattanooga's ace Peja Goold. The Terriers' number two pitcher went the complete game with eight hits allowed with three earned runs and three strikeouts in the loss to move her record to 8-5 on the season.
The Moc's struck early in the top of the first inning scoring one run and threatened to score more with runners on second and third, but Greenwood coerced a groundout to end the inning. Wofford responded in the bottom of the fourth when Brianna Stanley drove in Rivers Sampson with a double to cut the score to 2-1. However, that is all Wofford's offense could muster as Chattanooga added an insurance run in the top of the sixth to put the final score at 3-1.
Game Two
Terrier ace Margaret Axelson received the circle for game two and proceeded to shut down the Moc's bats. Pitching a complete game, her 16th of the 2025 season, she gave up four hits and only one run allowed. After the win, Axelson's record improves to 13-6 on the year.
The Terriers struck first in this game with a Brianna Stanley single that scored lead-off batter Hope Ingle. Chattanooga answered in the next frame with a run of their own to knot up the score at one apiece. However, Axelson shut down the Moc's bats allowing just two hits for the remainder of the contest. The Wofford offense woke up in in the bottom of the third as a Kalli Petty RBI single put Wofford up 2-1. The Terriers extended their lead in the fifth with a Brianna Stanley RBI single and then a Kalli Petty RBI double which gave Wofford a 4-1 lead. The Wofford bats continued the momentum in the sixth as Hannah Maddox drove in pinch runner Maize Gatlin then an Abby Gossett single drove in Wofford's final RBI of the game to bring the game to the final score of 6-1. Axelson gave up one hit in the seventh before closing the game out to set up game three as the series deciding matchup. If Wofford wins, they will jump Chattanooga in the Southern Conference standings to put themselves in the third seed in conference.
"I am extremely proud of the way Team Two fought today," said Head Coach Chelsea Butler after the game two win. "They had Margaret's back on both sides of the ball and fought hard until the very last out. I couldn't have asked for a better response from the team."
Wofford will be back in action tomorrow, April 19, to play game three against Chattanooga. The first pitch is slated for 1:00 pm.
