Wofford Continues to Excel With Latest NCAA APR Scores

SPARTANBURG, S.C. – The NCAA released the latest Academic Progress Rate (APR) results on Tuesday, marking the 21st year of data collection. Overall, thirteen of the eighteen sports at Wofford College were above the Division I average of 984 for all institutions. Eight sports had perfect scores of 1,000.

Each academic year, every Division I sports team calculates its APR using a simple and consistent formula. Each term, scholarship student-athletes can earn 1 point for remaining eligible and 1 point for staying in school or graduating. For schools that do not offer scholarships, recruited student-athletes are tracked.

This is the fourth consecutive year of publicly reported APRs after a one-year hiatus due to the COVID-19 pandemic. In 2022, the Division I board approved the release of APR scores but voted to continue the suspension of program penalties. Normal Academic Performance Program operations with program penalties and loss of access to postseason competition were originally scheduled to resume in spring 2024, but the Division I Committee on Academics decided not to enforce the loss of access to postseason competition for teams that scored lower than 930 last year, instead offering a conditional waiver due to lingering impacts of the pandemic. However, normal operations are being enforced this year for teams scoring below the 930 benchmark, with strategic penalties that encourage an emphasis and prioritization on academics.

Rates are an average of the past four years' performance. National aggregates are based on all teams with usable data at the time of analysis. The minimum APR academic standard for each team is 930.

The Wofford men's cross country, women's basketball, men's tennis, women's tennis, women's soccer, softball, volleyball, and rifle teams earned scores of 1,000. The eight teams matched the number from last year.

Other teams and their multi-year scores include baseball (993), football (964), men's basketball (968), men's golf (990), men's soccer (979), men's track (986), women's cross country (983), women's golf (989), women's lacrosse (995), and women's track (981). Softball was included in the results for the first time this year.

Among the twelve NCAA Division I schools in the state of South Carolina, Clemson led the way with ten teams receiving a score of 1,000 and Wofford was second with eight. Furman had seven, while the University of South Carolina had five.

In the Southern Conference, Wofford led the league with eight total teams with a score of 1,000. Furman had seven, with Mercer, Samford, The Citadel, and UNCG each having five.
