SPARTANBURG, S.C. – The Southern Conference named its weekly women's basketball player of the week award today, and Wofford's
Gabby Mundy earned her second honor of the year. The award is selected by the league office.
Â
"Gabby had an exceptional week and continues to show a level of poise and competitiveness beyond her years," said head coach
Jimmy Garrity. "She stepped up in a big way against Chattanooga with a career-high 32 points while playing heavy minutes and taking on tough defensive assignments against some of the league's best players. For a freshman to impact the game on both ends of the floor speaks volumes about her work ethic and growth."
Â
Mundy's selection is the third of the year for the team and the second of the season for her. It marks the third-straight season Wofford has had at least three players of the week. Mundy becomes the first freshman in program history to earn the honor twice in one season.
Â
Mundy, a freshman out of Liberty Hills, Texas, averaged 25 points per game for the week. In a setback against ETSU, she posted 18 points and shot 4-of-7 from three. Mundy followed that up with a career-high 32 points to defeat Chattanooga 67-63 and hand the Mocs their first conference loss of the season. She went a perfect 10-of-10 from the free throw line while adding five rebounds, three assists, and four steals.
Â
Mundy is averaging 15.3 points per game this season to lead the conference. She is one of three freshmen in the nation to lead a conference in scoring (Big Sky, WCC). Among freshmen, Mundy ranks eighth nationally in scoring. She is averaging a league-high 20.6 points per game during conference play.
Â
The Terriers are currently tied with Furman for second place in the conference. Wofford will travel to UNCG on Thursday, February 12, for a 7:00 p.m. tip-off. The team will close out its road trip with a game at Western Carolina on Saturday, February 14.
