CHATTANOOGA, TENN. – The Wofford College softball team split two games of the conference-opening doubleheader against Chattanooga on Saturday afternoon at Frost Stadium. Wofford won game one 11-2 before dropping the final game 7-3. The Terriers now hold a record of 21-5 with a 1-1 mark in conference play.
GAME ONE
The Terriers' offense came alive in the fourth inning with a four-run surge, taking full advantage of three Chattanooga errors and four hits to win 11-2 in game one.
Desirae Devine was a standout at the plate, racking up three hits and three RBIs.
Kalli Petty crossed the plate twice and notched two RBIs, while
Kaytlin Greenwood's speed was on display as she reached base three times, scored twice, and swiped two bases.
Abby Greenwood pitched a complete game, striking out five and giving up two earned runs over six innings. Greenwood's performance on the mound was key, allowing just five hits and only one extra-base hit. Her 133-pitch effort, with 73 strikes, showcased her ability to manage Chattanooga's lineup effectively.
The game remained scoreless until the second inning when Devine's single up the middle resulted in two unearned runs, putting Wofford ahead 2–0. In the fourth, Wofford widened the gap with a series of well-executed plays.
Kaytlin Greenwood's double brought in
Gracie Parker, followed by Greenwood scoring on a wild pitch and an error.
Addison Lucier then delivered an RBI triple, extending the lead to 6–0.
In the fifth inning,
Madison Thieke scored on a wild pitch after pinch-running for
Brianna Stanley. Devine's double further extended the Terriers' lead to 8–1. The sixth inning saw Wofford continue its dominance.
Kalli Petty's single drove in two more runs, and Parker's single added another, culminating in an 11–2 lead. Chattanooga managed to put a run on the board in both the fifth and sixth innings, but Wofford's relentless offense secured the win.
GAME TWO
Wofford put together three runs on five hits, featuring two doubles, while Chattanooga clinched the win with a pivotal three-run sixth inning in a 7-3 loss.
Kaytlin Greenwood stood out with two RBIs and a double in her four trips to the plate.
Desirae Devine contributed with two hits, including a double, and scored a run.
Kate Platte added an RBI and a hit in her four at-bats.
Margaret Axelson pitched a complete game, hurling 6 innings and striking out one.
The Terriers broke the ice in the second inning when Devine singled to right center and scored on Platte's bunt single up the middle, giving Wofford a 1–0 lead. Chattanooga evened the score in the fourth inning with Zoe Wright's RBI single to second base.
In the fifth inning, the Terriers reclaimed the lead.
Rivers Sampson walked and advanced on a throwing error, with
Madison Thieke coming in as a pinch-runner. Greenwood then doubled to left field, driving in Sampson and Thieke and putting the Terriers ahead 3–1. However, Chattanooga answered with Chloe Lackey's three-run homer, taking a 4–3 lead by the end of the inning. Chattanooga extended its lead in the sixth with a two-RBI single by Anna Dovey and an RBI single from Lackey, sealing the 7–3 Terrier loss.
Wofford will play the rubber match at 2:00 p.m. on Sunday, March 22, to decide the winner of the first conference series of the season against Chattanooga. The game can be streamed live on ESPN+.
