Box Score SPARTANBURG, S.C. – Four Terriers set career records as the Wofford volleyball team ended the season Saturday afternoon with a loss to Southern Conference opponent The Citadel. The Bulldogs captured their lone SoCon win of the season over the Terriers, 3-2 by a score of 30-28, 25-30, 26-30, 30-28, 15-11.
After taking the first point in game one, The Citadel (6-28, 1-17 SoCon)) capped a five point lead over Wofford at 11-6 by a kill from junior Rachel Sanders. A kill by sophomore Joanna Suddath tied the game at 12 all, then the Terriers took the lead with a kill by junior Liz Sheets from Suddath. Wofford held the lead until freshman Amanda Beal delivered a service ace that would tie the game at 21-21. Another Sanders kill gave the Bulldogs a five point lead at 27-22. In an attempt to comeback the Terriers rallied four straight points to pull the game score to 28-27. Freshman Jessica Maas stopped the comeback with a kill knotting the score at 29-27. At one more attempt a kill from freshman Stacy Byrd was not enough as The Citadel claimed the game victory with a kill by Beal.
In game two, the Bulldogs took a 3-0 lead off a pair of kills from Sanders. The Citadel maintained the lead until a service ace delivered by Suddath tied the score at 11 and a kill by sophomore Lindsey Richardson gave the Terriers (9-22, 2-16 SoCon) the lead for the rest of the game. An error by the Bulldogs gave Wofford a five point lead in the game at 27-22. A kill by sophomore Shanna Hughes from Suddath sealed the win for Wofford.
Again in game three The Citadel took a 3-0 lead over the Terriers and kept the lead until a kill by Byrd tied the game at 11, followed with a kill by Hughes to give Wofford the lead. Three ties occurred before the Terriers pulled their lead to four points at 27-23 off a kill from sophomore Sarah Palmer. A kill by Byrd claimed the game three victory.
In game four Wofford battled for a five point lead at 10-5. The Bulldogs rallied to comeback as a service ace by Sanders tied the score at 13. However the Terriers maintained the lead until a service ace by junior Emily Hill gave The Citadel a 24-23 lead, and they never looked back. Three straight kills by Maas, Beal and Sanders gave the Bulldogs the game four win and forced a game five.
Game five also featured a 3-0 lead by The Citadel. A kill by Hughes turned the lead over to Wofford at 4-3. Then a kill by Maas gave the Bulldogs back the lead at 7-6 which they kept to claim the game and eventually the match victory.
Sanders led all player with 23 kills and 66 total attacks. She also collected 19 digs and four assisted blocks for The Citadel. Maas also recorded double-figure kills with 13 and 42 total attacks.
Hill led the Bulldogs in assists with 49.
Junior Ashley Winter paced The Citadel in digs with 20. The Bulldogs logged 13 total team blocks.
Four Terriers collected season high records, marking new records in their careers. Hughes paced Wofford as she collected a career high 22 kills and 63 total attacks. Sheets dished 18 kills as she also set a new career record in kills. Richardson’s set a new career record in total attacks as she finished with 46.
Suddath concluded the five game match with a career high 68 of the Terriers’ 74 assists.
Leading Wofford’s defense was Thompson with 31 digs. Hughes finished with 24 and Palmer had 21. Reaching double digit digs also came from Suddath with 17 and junior Carolyn Rivers with 12.
