SoCon No. 1 ranked College of Charleston defeats Wofford

Box Score SPARTANBURG, S.C. – Wofford volleyball was handed a 3-0 defeat Friday night inside the Benjamin Johnson Arena as the College of Charleston claims another Southern Conference victory. With the win, the Conference’s No. 1 ranked Cougars improved their season to 21-7 overall and 15-2 in the SoCon, while the Terriers fall to 9-21 in the season and 2-15 in league action.

In a competitive game one, the Terriers and Cougars battled back and forward for the lead including nine ties. With the score pinned at 19-19, a Wofford error gave the College of Charleston the lead and they never looked back. A kill by senior Lindsey Kane gave the Cougars their largest lead of the game by five points putting the score at 28-23. Another Kane kill sealed the victory for the College of Charleston by a score of 30-26.

The Cougars dominated game two as they collected a team hitting percentage of .371 while the Terriers were held to a -.060 team hitting percentage. The College of Charleston jumped out to an early 5-0 lead with contributions of a pair of kills from senior Deanna Patrick. At 18-13, the Cougars rallied 11 straight points before junior Liz Sheets scored a kill from sophomore Joanna Suddath. Maintaining the lead through the game, the College of Charleston claimed game two by a score of 30-15.

Game three began as another competitive match featuring eight ties. Locked at 10 all, a replay of game one, a Terrier error gave the Cougars the lead and they again never looked back. A service ace by sophomore Emily Sawin put the College of Charleston up by seven at 18-11. A block by freshman Catelyn Amende pulled Wofford within three at 19-16. However, the Cougars proved too much as they crowned themselves match victors with a win in game three by a score of 30-23.

College of Charleston freshman Cole Dawley delivered an impressive performance as she ended the match as the only player to reach double-figure kills with 10. She logged a .348 hitting percentage from the 10 kills, two errors and 23 total attacks. Dawley also led the Cougars in digs with 15. Kane finished with a match high 28 assists.

For the College of Charleston three others recorded double digit digs. Senior Megan Parkerson collected 13, Kane had 12 and Sawin finished with 10.

The Cougars logged 14 total team blocks.

Suddath also registered an all around notable performance. She gathered a .333 hitting percentage from six kills, one error and 15 total attacks along with a team best 26 assists and 12 digs.

Sophomore Shanna Hughes paired with Sheets to lead the Terriers in kills. Hughes concluded the match with nine kills and 36 total attacks, while Sheets also had nine kills and 24 total attacks.
