SPARTANBURG, S.C. – In the final home game of the season, the Wofford men’s soccer team was defeated 1-0 on Wednesday night at Snyder Field. Davidson’s goal was scored by Yannick Pilgrim at 76:08.
Wofford falls to 5-11 on the season and 1-5 in the Southern Conference. Davidson is 4-12-1 overall and 2-4 in conference play. The Terriers were led by Wilson Hood with five shots in the game. Davidson’s Alex Caskey had three shots. Overall, Wofford out-shot the Wildcats 13 to 12 in the game.
In the first half, Davidson took the first three shots of the game. At 17:00 in the first half, Andrew Eppelsheimer had a shot blocked, which was followed by a header by Wilson Hood that went wide.
With seven minutes left in the first, Kentrel Owens had a shot from the top of the box that was saved by Robby Goldsberry. A header by Phil Beene with just under four minutes on the clock went just wide left of the net. Davidson had the final scoring chance of the half with a shot that went wide by Charlie Reiter.
As the sun went down, the temperature cooled off but the action heated up on the field in the second half. Davidson’s Tim Roark was given a yellow card at 51:22 on a foul that took Wofford’s Andrew Eppelsheimer out of the game. Davidson had the next couple shots on net before Wilson Hood took a shot from ten yards out that was saved and Hood then had a shot on the rebound that went just wide to the left of the net.
The Wildcats finally cracked the scoreless tie at 76:08 when Yannick Pilgrim put a shot into the left corner of the net for a 1-0 lead. Greg Mcnamara provided the cross for the assist on the goal.
With just under two minutes to go in the game, Wofford had a chance to tie the game on a loose ball in the box, but Robby Goldsberry was able to handle the ball. Armin Kinigadner put a shot on net with just twelve seconds left in the game that was saved to preserve the win for the Wildcats.
For the Terriers, goalie Joey Taylor five saves on the night, while Davidson keeper Robby Goldsberry had four saves. Wofford had 20 fouls, while Davidson had 17 in the contest. Davidson had a 4-2 edge on corner kicks.
Prior to the game, the Terriers recognized the five seniors on the team: Joey Taylor, Phil Beene, Clark Powell, Haskins Howerton and Chett McCubrey.
The Terriers will travel to UNC Asheville on Saturday before the final regular season conference match on November 4 at College of Charleston.
