SPARTANBURG, S.C. -- A controversial call led to Wofford taking a lead but Appalachian State rallied, netting the game winner in double overtime, for a 2-1 Southern Conference men's soccer decision Saturday night at Snyder Field in Spartanburg, S.C.
The Terriers staved off an early offensive rush by the Mountaineers, which saw the visitors register six of the game's opening seven shots. However, senior goalkeeper Joey Taylor kept Appalachian State (7-3, 2-0 SoCon) off the scoreboard during the opening stanza.
Wofford (4-7, 0-2 SoCon) rebounded and had a scoring chance at 36:22 when sophomore Wilson Hood slipped through the Mountaineer defense, only to be tackled from behind by an ASU defender. While the defender was issued a yellow card for the play, the Terrier coaching staff argued for a more series infraction.
The result set up a free kick, taken by junior Branson Hyatt from 20 yards out. He sent a ball around the left side of the wall to a streaking Nick Schuermann, who redirected the ball past Appalachian's Collin Taylor for the game's first goal two seconds after the initial foul at 36:24.
Wofford continued to push forward offensively and closed the shot margin to two, 7-5, at the break. The Terriers began the second half dominating possession and keeping pressure on ASU's backline and Taylor.
Hyatt nearly put the hosts up a pair when his free kick bounced off the crossbar from 25 yards out 13 minutes into the frame. Sophomore Kentrel Owens also had a header attempt saved.
The Mountaineers were able to score the equalizer at 71:04 as Juan Obregon fired a rocket from 35 yards out off the right post and into the net. Despite his shot, Wofford ended regulation with a 15-10 lead on shots after holding a 7-3 edge during the second 45 minutes.
Appalachian took advantage in the first overtime period but neither team could find the back of the net. The only shot of the second extra frame came off the foot of the Moutaineers' Antonio Harley at 104:58 and it resulted in the game winning goal despite a plead for offsides from the Terrier defense.
Wofford finished with a 16-to-14 shot advantage, while Hood led all players with six attempts. Harley paced ASU with four shots.
The Terriers will continue Southern Conference action with a 7 p.m. Tuesday match at UNC Greensboro in Greensboro, N.C.
