STATESBORO, Ga.- The Wofford volleyball team lost a 3-2 heartbreaker to the Eagles of Georgia Southern on Saturday night ending their shot of gaining a spot in the Southern Conference Tournament. Georgia Southern took the match on set scores of 27-25, 13-25, 25-17, 19-25 and 15-7.
Wofford (16-17, 6-12 SoCon) jumped out to a 5-1 advantage in the opening set and continued to build on the lead but were unable to sustain it late in the set. With the score knotted at 23 both teams traded points to keep the dead lock until 25, when the Eagles strung together two points to take the opening set 27-25.
The Terriers would not let the late set woe’s keep them down as they responded with aggression in set two. With the score tied at nine Wofford put together two extended runs keyed by solid serving from Liz Sheets and Carolyn Rivers to take a commanding 23-12 advantage and eventually the set.
Set three saw Georgia Southern (16-16, 9-9 SoCon) come out hot and create an edge early. The eagles were able to maintain the lead throughout en route to taking a two set to one advantage.
Wofford responded the same way in set three in which they developed a lead early and held on the entire way. The Terrier scoring runs were once again keyed on solid serving but this time it was Shanna Hughes and Joanna Suddath who did the honor. The Terriers took the set with ease and set up a fifth set battle.
Georgia Southern Jumped on the Terriers early on creating a 6-1 advantage in the fifth and deciding set. Wofford would get within three at 7-4 but the Eagles extended the lead with two small scoring runs to take the set and the match.
The Terrier offense was paced by Sheets who hit .310 with ten kills on 29 attacks committing just one error. Lindsey Richardson also reached double digits in kills with 11 while Suddath added 36 assists.
Brittany Thompson was one of four Terriers to reach double figures in digs as she led the way with 26; Hughes added 22 while Rivers added 16 and Suddath ten.
Georgia Southern was led by Lauren Claybaugh who hit .257 with 13 kills on 47 attacks committing five errors. Hayli Ketner paced the defense with 23 digs.
The Terriers wrap up their 2008 season on Tuesday, November 25 ,at UNC Asheville.
