CHARLESTON, S.C. - Following a sweep on Saturday evening at the hands of the College of Charleston, Wofford responded with a sweep of its own taking down the Citadel 3-0 in Charleston S.C. on Sunday afternoon. The Terriers took the match on set scores of 25-19, 25-19 and 25-14.
Wofford (15-13, 5-8 SoCon) would jump out on the Bulldogs early streaking out to a 10-5 lead capped off by a Shanna Hughes service ace. The Citadel would get within two at 15-13, but the Terriers would hold their ground and extend the lead to 17-13 on kills by Lindsey Richardson and Liz Sheets. Wofford would then push the lead to 20-14, a lead they would not lose en route to taking the first set.
In set two, Wofford once again jumped out to a comfortable lead taking a 9-3 advantage into a Citadel (8-19, 1-12 SoCon) timeout. Following the timeout, Wofford would continue to lead until a push from the Citadel knotted the score at 16. The Terriers would then roll of three straight points to take a lead they would not surrender in taking the second set.
Keeping pace with the start of set one and two, Wofford rushed out to a 10-2 lead in the third set, putting the set out of hand early. The Terriers would not let down and led at one point of the set 19-6. Leading 22-14 Hughes knocked down back-to-back kills to give Wofford a match point in which Sheets capitalized on with a kill of her own.
Lindsey Richardson led a balanced offensive attack for the Terriers hitting .467 with nine kills on 15 attacks committing just two errors. Hughes had a match high 11 kills, while Stacy Byrd added nine and Sheets chipped in eight.
The Terrier defense was led by libero Brittany Thompson who tallied 17 digs, while Sarah Palmer came up with 13 and setter Joanna Suddath added ten to go along with 38 assists.
The Citadel offense was led by Rachel Sanders with 9 kills. On the defensive side, Tatum Jestila led the way with 15 digs along with Sanders who added ten.
Wofford will return to action Wednesday night at 7 p.m. in Greenville, S.C. as they travel to SoCon rival Furman.
