Wofford Men’s Soccer Falls 3-0 At Elon

ELON, N.C. – The Wofford men’s soccer team was defeated 3-0 by Elon on Saturday night in the first round of the Southern Conference Tournament. Justin Wyatt had a goal and two assists for the Phoenix in the win.

With the loss, Wofford ends the season with a 6-13 overall record and a 2-5 mark in the Southern Conference. Elon improved to 10-8-1 overall and advance to the semifinals of the conference tournament. Wofford was led by Nick Schuermann with three shots, while goalie Joey Taylor made five saves.

Elon got on the board quickly, needing just 1:32 to grab a 1-0 advantage. The goal was set up when Wyatt took a corner which sailed across the goal to Kinney's head. Kinney's header found the foot of Erfan Imeni who banged home his fifth goal of the season.

With the Phoenix up 1-0, Wofford was awarded a penalty kick following an Elon foul. Nick Schuermann's PK attempt was denied by a sprawling Clint Irwin to preserve the lead.

The Phoenix pushed its lead to 2-0 at 15:38. Aaron Parker played a ball to Wyatt who touched the ball back to Parker. Parker then ripped a shot from the left side of the goal mouth to the far right side for his seventh tally of his senior campaign.

Wyatt netted Elon's final goal of the game. Kinney played a long ball to Daniel Street, who carried the ball forward. Street connected with a streaking Wyatt who sent home his 12th goal of the year.

For the Terriers, goalie Joey Taylor had five saves on the night, while Elon keeper Clint Erwin made one save in the shutout. Elon had a 10-7 edge on corner kicks. The game was played in front of a Rudd Field record crowd of 1,107.

The game marked the end of the 2008 season for the Terriers. In the first season under head coach Ralph Polson, Wofford won two conference games for the first time since 1999. Eight of the Terriers’ losses were by one goal.
