SPARTANBURG, S.C. – After losing a 3-0 lead and with Charlotte catching up 3-2, the Wofford women’s tennis team split the final two matches and held on to extend its win streak to seven matches, as the Terriers defeated the 49ers, 4-3, Thursday afternoon at the Reeves Tennis Center.
Wofford claimed the doubles point winning all three matches, capturing its seventh doubles sweep of the season. Senior Laura Lynn Williams teamed up with junior Merry Ellen Henry at the No. 1 position and defeated Ana Spivakovsky and Koren Fleming 8-4. At the No. 2 spot, the duo of senior Adriane Hodges and junior Cayley Wetaig beat Yudeshnee Pillay and Candace Cunningham 8-3. Freshmen teammates Haley Baird and Sonia Anand claimed an 8-4 victory over Gabi Vergara and Kimber Redfern.
In singles action, Baird competed at the No. 5 position and defeated Cunningham in a dominating performance, 6-0, 6-1.
Hodges, the Southern Conference women’s tennis player of the month for February, defeated Pillay at the No. 2 position, 6-2, 4-6, 6-3, securing the match victory for the Terriers.
“We all knew that today’s match was going to be a tough one,” said coach Katie Hangstefer. “We came out strong in the beginning by getting the doubles point, but really had to fight hard to hold for the win. It was great to win this match against such a tough team.”
Wofford’s next match will be Wednesday against East Carolina at 2 p.m. at the Reeves Tennis Center.
