Baseball Defeated 6-5 By Davidson

DAVIDSON, NC – The Wofford College baseball team was defeated 6-5 by Davidson on Saturday afternoon at Wilson Field. With the game tied at 5-5 after eight innings, the Wildcats hit a home run in the bottom of the ninth to win the game.

Wofford is now 16-9 on the season and 2-3 in the Southern Conference, while Davidson is 8-14 and 1-4 in the conference. The Terriers were led by Shane Kirkley with three hits, including a home run in the eighth inning. Wofford starter Ben Austin went 6.1 innings with eight strikeouts.

The Wildcats scored first, as Chris Fitzpatrick reached on a double and he was driven home on a single up the middle by Zach Kayne for a 1-0 lead after one inning. Davidson added a second run in the bottom of the second inning.

Wofford led off the third with a double by Emre Caglayan. He stole third base and scored on an error to make it a 2-1 game. In the fourth, Shane Kirkley opened up the inning with a double. A single by Mo Seay gave the Terriers runners on the corners. Adam Kearney hit a sacrifice fly to right field to score Kirkley. A single by Josh McKinney scored Seay and Wofford was up 3-2.

Davidson tied the game in the bottom of the sixth inning when Chase FitzPatrick reached on a single and Jay Honeycutt drove him in for a 3-3 game. Wofford led off the eighth inning with a solo homer by Shane Kirkley to left center. Adam Kearney hit a single and was driven in by Emre Caglayan on a fielders choice to take a 5-3 lead.

The Wildcats answered in their half of the eighth inning when Tommy Piacenza hit a triple down the left line to score two runs and tie the game at 5-5. Wofford went three-up and three-down in the top of the ninth. In the bottom of the ninth, Hugh Eden led off the inning with a shot to left center field that hit the top of the fence and was ruled a home run.

Wofford will conclude the series with Davidson at 1:00 pm on Sunday. After a two-game series at top-ranked Arizona State on Tuesday and Wednesday, the Terriers return home on April 4 for a three-game series against The Citadel.
