Baseball Downs Davidson 6-4 In Extra Innings

DAVIDSON, NC – The Wofford College baseball team scored two runs in the top of the tenth inning to defeat Davidson 6-4 on Sunday afternoon at Wilson Field. The Terriers came up with two runs in the top of the ninth to tie the game at 4-4 which sent the game to extra innings.

Wofford is now 17-9 on the season and 3-3 in the Southern Conference, while Davidson is 8-14 and 1-5 in the conference. The Terriers were led by Shane Kirkley with two hits and two RBIs and Emre Caglayan with two RBIs in the ninth to tie the game. Tom Dolinak started for Wofford and went 5.2 innings with three strikeouts. Pete Noordsy went 3.0 innings with five strikeouts and Michael Gilmartin got the win with 1.1 innings pitched and three strikeouts.

For the third-straight game against Davidson, the Wildcats got on the board first. Chris FitzPatrick and Chase FitzPatrick both hit doubles as Davidson took an early 2-0 lead. In the bottom of the third inning, Hugh Eden hit a home run and Chase FitzPatrick hit a sacrifice fly as the Wildcats were up 4-0.

In the sixth inning, the Terriers were able to cut into the lead. Jake Williams opened with a single and Sterling Dye walked. Michael Gilmartin hit a single and a throwing error scored Jake Williams and the runners also advanced. A ground ball hit by Shane Kirkley scored Dye from third and Davidson’s lead was 4-2.

The Terriers went into the top of the ninth down two runs. With one out and one on base, Kyle Behrendt hit a single. Josh McKinney reached first on an error, loading the bases. Emre Caglayan hit a single to center field to score two runs. The inning ended on a double play.

In the bottom of the ninth, the Wildcats left the bases loaded. The Terriers struck quickly in the top of the tenth, with Sterling Dye hitting a double to lead off. Michael Gilmartin put down a sacrifice bunt to advance Dye to third. A single up the middle by Shane Kirkley scored Dye. A double down the left field line by Keith Munns scored Kirkley and Wofford was up 6-4.

Davidson’s first two batters in the bottom of the tenth were outs. After getting a base runner courtesy of a walk, Michael Gilmartin struck out the final batter on three straight pitches to end the game.

Wofford out-hit the Wildcats 9 to 7. Davidson left 11 runners on base, while Wofford stranded only six. Davidson committed two errors in the game.

Wofford will travel out west for a two-game series at top-ranked Arizona State on Tuesday and Wednesday. The Terriers return home on April 4 for a three-game series against The Citadel.
