Baseball Drops Doubleheader to GSU

SPARTANBURG, S.C. – The Wofford College baseball team lost both games of a doubleheader to Georgia Southern on Sunday afternoon at Russell C. King Field. The Eagles took the first game 12-6 and completed the series sweep with a 19-12 win in the finale.

Wofford is now 20-25 on the season and 4-14 in the Southern Conference, while Georgia Southern is 25-18 on the season and 10-8 in conference play. Wofford was led in the two games by Kyle Behrendt with seven hits in eight at bats, while Michael Gilmartin had seven RBIs. The Terriers had 28 hits in the two games, while the Eagles had 31. Wofford committed eight errors on the day.

In the first game, the Eagles scored first with a solo home run by Phillip Porter. Wofford answered in the bottom of the second when Jake Williams hit a double to right center. Keith Munns then hit a single which scored Williams for a 1-1 game.

Georgia Southern broke the game open in the top of the third with a grand slam home run by Griffin Benedict. A.J. Wirnsberger added a solo homer with two outs and a single by Brian Pierce added another run for a 7-1 lead. Wofford got one run back in the bottom of the third with a solo homer by Josh McKinney for a 7-2 score.

After scoreless fourth and fifth innings, the Eagles added two runs in the top of the sixth. The Terriers scored one run in the bottom of the sixth when Kyle Behrendt led off with a single and eventually scored on a passed ball for a 9-3 game.

A solo home run by Sterling Dye in the bottom of the seventh pulled the Terriers to 9-4. However the Eagles added three more runs in the top of the eighth with doubles by Griffin Benedict and Jeremiah Parker for a 12-4 lead. In the bottom of the ninth, a home run by Michael Gilmartin to right center scored two runs for a 12-6 final score.

For Wofford, Ben Austin (4-4) went 4.2 innings with seven hits and seven runs and a career-high ten strikeouts. Pete Noordsy threw for 2.1 innings with three hits and five runs allowed and a strikeout. Drew Sheridan went the final two innings with a hit and a strikeout.

Georgia Southern starter Kyle Kamppi (4-2) threw 6.0 innings with seven hits and three runs allowed with four strikeouts. Tony Chisman went the final three innings and allowed three runs and three hits with two strikeouts for the save.

The second game began, but went to a rain delay with one out in the top of the first. After a 50 minute delay, play resumed. The Eagles opened the game with four runs on two hits and two Wofford errors in the first. The Terriers responded with two runs in the bottom of the first as three straight doubles by Sterling Dye, Kyle Behrendt and Michael Gilmartin made it a 4-2 game.

In the top of the second, home runs by Ty Wright and Phillip Porter, along with a RBI single from David Richardson gave the Eagles an 8-2 lead. The Terriers got one run back on an RBI single from Kyle Behrendt to score Neil Robinette.
A triple from Ty Wright scored one run for Georgia Southern in the top of the third, and Wofford added a run in the bottom of the third on a home run by Jake Williams for a 9-4 game.

Georgia Southern added five runs in the top of the fifth, including a home run by A.J. Wirnsberger and a double by Ty Wright for a 14-4 lead. A homer by Michael Gilmartin in the bottom of the fourth scored two runs for the Terriers to make it a 14-6 game. In the bottom of the fourth, the Terriers pulled closer with an RBI single from Alex Lee and a single from Michael Gilmartin that scored two runs for a 14-9 ballgame.

The Eagles took advantage of two errors in the top of the seventh to add five runs, all unearned for a ten-run lead at 19-9. In the bottom of the eighth, Wofford scored three runs when Mo Seay hit a home run to left center. The Terriers left a runner on base in the bottom of the ninth as the final score was 19-12.

Wofford starter Tom Dolinak (2-1) went three innings with ten hits and ten runs allowed with four strikeouts. John Cornely threw 3.2 innings with ten hits and nine runs with three strikeouts. Chip Hunt went 1.1 innings with a strikeout and Dawson Smith went the ninth inning.

For Georgia Southern, starter Andy Moye threw 2.1 innings with eight hits and four runs with three strikeouts. Aaron Eubanks (5-1) went 1.2 innings with two hits and two runs with a strikeout. Charlie Strohecker threw two innings with four hits and three runs, while Burt Barto threw two innings with three hits and three runs. Blake Nation threw the ninth with a hit and two strikeouts.

Notes: In the second game, Alex Lee started his first collegiate game. Georgia Southern designated hitter Ty Wright hit for the cycle in the second game. Ben Austin had a career-high ten strikeouts in the first game, moving him to ninth all-time in school history with 163. With the loss, the Terriers have been swept in their last three conference series and have dropped their last eight games.

Wofford will travel to Greensboro to face North Carolina A&T on Tuesday afternoon at 3:00 pm. Next weekend the Terriers will play a three-game conference series at Western Carolina.
