Baseball Drops Doubleheader at C of C

MOUNT PLEASANT, S.C. – The Wofford College baseball team lost both games of a doubleheader to the College of Charleston on Saturday at Patriots Point Field. The Terriers were defeated 20-1 in the first game and in game two fell 10-0.

Wofford is now 21-32 on the season and 4-20 in the Southern Conference, while the College of Charleston is 34-17 overall and 16-8 in conference play. The Terriers were led in game two by Sterling Dye with two hits and Jake Williams had the lone RBI on the day.

In game one, the Cougars overpowered the Terriers with 19 hits and 20 runs scored. The College of Charleston scored first with a RBI double by Jeremie Tice in the bottom of the first. After a scoreless second inning, the Cougars added to the lead when Michael Harrington and Stuart Haywood each hit three-run homers to go up 7-0.

In the bottom of the fourth, the Cougars added six more runs as Cole Raker hit a two RBI single, Austin Morgan had an RBI single, Clay McCord belted out a two RBI double and Brandon Sizemore added an RBI single for a 13-0 lead.

The hits kept coming in the bottom of the sixth for the College of Charleston. Brandon Sizemore was hit by a pitch to score one run, Michael Harrington hit a sacrifice fly to score one, Joey Bergman hit a two RBI single and Matt Mansilla capped it off with a three-run homer for a 20-0 advantage.

The Terriers finally got on the board in the top of the seventh. Kyle Behrendt singled and was driven home with a single from Jake Williams to end the shutout. Neither team scored in the final two innings of play for a 20-1 final.

Wofford starter Tom Dolinak (2-3) went 3.0 innings with seven hits and seven runs allowed with two strikeouts. Reid McElveen went an inning with six runs and six hits allowed. Drew Sheridan threw 1.2 innings with four hits, six runs and one strikeout. Joe Haumacher went 1.1 innings with two hits and one run with a strikeout. Dawson Smith closed the game with one inning without a hit or run.

For the College of Charleston, starter Jesse Simpson (7-2) went 7.0 innings with one run and three hits allowed with eight strikeouts. Pete VandenBout closed the final two innings with one hit and three strikeouts.

In the second game of the doubleheader, the start was delayed due to lightning in the area. Once the game was underway, the Terriers began with hits from Sterling Dye and Jake Williams, but did not score. In the top of the second, Wofford led off with a double from Keith Munns. Munns advanced to third but the Terriers could not bring him home. The College of Charleston got on the board in the bottom of the second when Gabe Marchant hit an RBI single.

Both teams were held scoreless in the third and fourth innings. In the bottom of the fifth, the Cougars added runs with an RBI single by Jeremie Tice and a RBI double from Joey Bergman to take a 4-0 lead.

The College of Charleston added four more runs in the bottom of the sixth, including three runs on a homer by Michael Harrington, for an 8-0 lead. Wofford had two runners on with no outs in the top of the eighth, but did not get a runner across home.

An RBI single from Brandon Sizemore in the bottom of the eighth scored two more runs for the Cougars. The Terriers were able to get two runners on base in the top of the ninth, but were held scoreless for the 10-0 final.

Wofford starter John Cornely (0-7) went 5.1 innings with eight hits and six runs allowed with three strikeouts. Pete Noordsy threw 1.2 innings with one hit and two runs and a strikeout. Chip Hunt went the final inning with two hits and two runs and three strikeouts.

For the College of Charleston, starter Austin Garrett (6-2) went 7.0 innings with six hits, no runs and three strikeouts. Nick Osterman threw an inning with no hits and a strikeout, while Michael Kohn threw the ninth inning and allowed one hit with one strikeout.

Notes: The College of Charleston had four home runs on the day, giving them 106 on the season to lead the NCAA. Wofford was out hit in the two games 30-11 and left 14 men on base, including eleven in the second game. The 10-0 loss in the second game marked the first time this season the Terriers have been shutout. Michael Harrington became the College of Charleston’s all-time home run leader and has a SoCon-high 23 on the season.

After taking a break this week for exams, the Terriers final home series will be Friday, May 16 and Saturday, May 17 against Appalachian State.
