ELON, N.C. -- Wofford sophomore Wilson Hood broke up a shutout attempt by host Elon, but the Phoenix kept the Terriers from adding to their total in a 3-1 Elon victory Wednesday night in the Southern Conference men's soccer opener for both teams at Rudd Field in Elon, N.C.

Hood tallied his team-leading third goal of the season at 81:46 on an assist from Phil Beene, who was seeing his first action of the campaign. Wofford (3-3, 0-1 SoCon) capitalized on an offside call against the Phoenix 30 seconds earlier.

Elon (2-3-1, 1-0 SoCon) put the first mark on the scoreboard at 9:47 when Kyle Boerner sent a deep ball from the goalkeeper position to Aaron Parker, who then beat Terrier goalie Joey Taylor. Wofford remained within a goal at the half despite being outshot, 9-2.

The second half opened with a quick Phoenix goal, at 46:25, as Efran Imeni fired an attempt deflecting off a Terrier defender into the net.

The final score for the hosts came at 68:43 when Stephen Miller and Brad Franks fed Justin Wyatt on a cross.

Hood finished with a team-best two of Wofford's five shots, while Imeni and Wyatt combined for nine of Elon's 15 attempts.

Taylor registered three saves to Boerner's two in the goalkeeper battle.

The Terriers will return to action when they host the Wofford/Nike Soccer Classic presented by Jimmy John's this weekend at Snyder Field. Tournament play will begin at 5 p.m. Friday when Furman faces Georgia State before Wofford takes the field against USC Upstate at 7:30 p.m. Sunday's games will feature Furman and USC Upstate at 1 p.m. followed by Wofford and Georgia State at 3:30 p.m.
