Men's Soccer Wins 1-0 over Davidson

SPARTANBURG, SC – Wofford men’s soccer won 1-0 over Davidson Saturday evening at Alumni Stadium in Davidson, North Carolina. The Terriers' scored with under three minutes left in regulation on a goal by Kentrel Owens.

The Terriers move to 8-1-3 overall and 4-0-1 in SoCon play, while Davidson shifts to 10-5-0 overall and 3-3 in SoCon action. Wofford is in first place in the conference standings and are the lone undefeated team in league play. The game-winning goal by Owens was his fifth of the season to lead the team.

In the first half, the Terriers opened with the first shot of the game at 7:37 by Paulo Bonfim which was blocked. A header shot by Davidson’s Brian McGue at 8:46 went wide left. In less than 5 minutes at 25:28, Wofford attempted three shots by Andrew Eppelsheimer that went wide right, Moe Kelli who was blocked, and Armin Kinigadner that went high respectively. With only four shots attempted by each team in the first half, the score was tied at 0-0. 

During the second half, the Terriers opened up the shots again with Armin Kinigadner at 52:05 with a shot that went right. After four shots attempted by Davidson, Wofford’s Kentrel Owens was able to take advantage of a misplayed ball near midfield and score at 87:37. Owens raced in on goal and was able to maintain control despite a strong challenge from Davidson’s defenders. Goalkeeper Chip Sanders came out to challenge the shot and was able to disrupt Owens’ attempt, but Owens was able to regain control and score from about 10 yards out.

With the win, Wofford has set a new mark for SoCon wins in a season with four. In addition, the eight overall wins surpass the mark for the most in Wofford's NCAA Division I era. It was the first time Wofford has defeated Davidson since 1980, ending a 15-game winning streak in the series by the Wildcats.

Wofford had a ten to nine lead on shots. Wofford goalkeeper Thomas Hunter had three saves in his sixth shutout of the season, while Davidson’s Chip Sanders did not make a save. The six shutouts by Hunter are tied for the single-season record set by MArk Buskirk (1979) and Joey Taylor (2007).

The Terriers are back in action Tuesday, October 27 against Clemson at Historic Riggs Field at 7 pm.
