SPARTANBURG, SC - The Wofford Men’s Soccer team dominated the pace of play in the first half however settled for a 2-2 tie with UNC Greensboro Saturday evening in their second Southern Conference game of the 2009 season at Snyder Field. The Terriers had a commanding lead on shots 25 to 13 through the game.
Wofford moves to 5-0-3 and 1-0-1 in SoCon while UNC Greensboro goes to 3-4-3 and 1-0-1 in SoCon. Kentrel Owens led the Terriers with 7 shots.
The Terriers had control of the game early as they recorded the first eleven shots of the game in the opening half. At 13:23 Wofford’s Kentrel Owens made the first goal for the Terrier’s with an assist by Armin Kinigadner with a shot into the left side of the goal. Then at 29:49 Wofford’s second goal came by way of Branson Hyatt with an assist from Wilson Hood that was first deflected by UNC Greensboro goalie Peyton Ford then shot across back into the net.
In the second half, Wofford was close in play with ten shots in the period to UNC Greensboro’s nine. At 51:46 a shot to the right of the goal by the Spartan’s Thomas Campbell was the first of two goals for UNC Greensboro. The second goal came at 73:41 when the Spartan’s Matt Foxx who was assisted by Mike Magnotic tapped the ball in over Wofford’s goalkeeper Thomas Hunter.
In the first overtime period, Kentrel Owens had a shot from ten yards out that was blocked. The Terrier’s had three more shots in the first overtime by Paulo Bonfim, Yakov Rubinchik, and Andrew Eppelsheimer that went wide then saved twice respectfully. As the teams went to the second overtime, the Spartan’s had a chance at 101:28 when E.J. O’Keefe had a header that went high. The Spartan’s had their second shot on goal in the second overtime at 107:10 when Ryan Davis had a header that was saved by Thomas Hunter.
Wofford goalie Thomas Hunter made nine saves in the tie, while Peyton Ford had thirteen saves for the Spartan’s. The Terriers had 4 corner kicks to 8 for the Spartan’s. UNC Greensboro had ten fouls to Wofford’s four, and there were 5 yellow cards issued.
Wofford will play away this Tuesday against North Carolina State at 7:00 pm.
