SPARTANBURG, SC – In an exciting contest at Snyder Field, the Wofford men’s soccer team was defeated 2-1 on Friday night by the College of Charleston. Steven Nagy had both goals for the Cougars, while Branson Hyatt had the goal for the Terriers.
The Terriers are 8-2-3 on the season and 4-1-1 in the Southern Conference. The College of Charleston is 10-8 overall and 4-2 in SoCon play. The loss was the first for Wofford in the conference this season.
The College of Charleston had three corner kicks in the eleven minutes of play and had the first shot of the game at 13:13 by Francis Twohig that went wide. The Terriers had their first shot of the night on a header by Andrew Eppelsheimer that was saved by Clark Hankins. The best chance for Wofford early came at 19:16 when Kentrel Owens got into the box, but his shot was blocked. At 39:09, Steven Nagy fired a shot from 20 yards out into the top right corner of the net for a 1-0 lead. Francis Twohig had the assist on the goal. At the end of the first half, the Cougars had a four to two advantage on shots.
The Cougars kept up the offensive pressure early in the second half and added a second goal at 50:43 when Steven Nagy scored his second of the night from 15 yards out to the left corner of the goal. The Terriers were able to get one goal back at 65:54 when Branson Hyatt fired a shot from the left side of the field 35 yards out that found the top right corner of the net to make it a 2-1 game. Wofford continued the offensive pressure, taking the next four shots on goal. However the Terriers were unable to find the equalizer.
Thomas Hunter had two saves and two goals against for Wofford, while Clark Hankins had three saves and one goal against for the Cougars. The College of Charleston had eight corners to Wofford’s three.
Paulo Bonfim and Matt Morris both received yellow cards in the match.
The game was the final home contest for ten Wofford seniors who were honored before the game.
The Terriers are back in action November 3 against Furman at Stone Soccer Stadium for their final Southern Conference match of the 2009 regular season at 7 pm.
