SPARTANBURG, S.C. – The Wofford College baseball team scored eight runs in the sixth inning to come back and defeat Gardner-Webb 12-10 on Tuesday evening at Russell C. King Field. The Terriers were down 8-4 before the eight runs scored in the sixth gave Wofford the lead for the first time in the game at 12-8.
Wofford is now 5-6 on the season and 1-2 in the Southern Conference, while Gardner-Webb is 6-5 overall and 3-0 in the Big South. The Terriers were led by Josh McKinney with three hits, while Michael Gilmartin, Kyle Behrendt and Mac Doyle each had two RBIs. The Runnin’ Bulldogs were led by Bubbie Spake with three hits and Daniel Cooke and Ty Boyles with two RBIs each.
Gardner-Webb got the game started with three runs in the top of the first. Wofford was able to get one run back in the bottom of the second when doubles from Jake Williams and Mac Doyle drove in one run.
In the top of the third, the Runnin’ Bulldogs led off with a double and ended up scoring two runs to take a 5-1 lead. Wofford responded with two runs in the bottom half of the third as Alex Lee and Josh McKinney both scored.
With a 5-3 lead, Gardner-Webb led off the fourth inning with a double and scored three runs on three hits in their half of the frame. A double from Neil Robinette scored Kyle Behrendt, who had reached on an error, to make it an 8-4 game.
After a scoreless fifth, Wofford came to the plate in the bottom of the sixth. Fourteen Terriers batted in the inning, with eight runs scored on seven hits. Kyle Behrendt had two hits in the inning, while three players were walked on the way to a 12-8 lead.
Gardner-Webb got one run back in the eight inning before Bobby Streisel got a strikeout with the bases loaded to end the inning. In the ninth, Brock Miller hit a solo home run to make it a 12-10 game before the final two outs gave the Terriers the win.
For Wofford, starter Reid McElveen threw the first inning and allowed three runs (two earned) and two hits with two strikeouts. Anthony Rowland went 3.0 innings and allowed five hits, five runs (two earned) along with two strikeouts. J.D. Osborne (1-0) threw two innings with one hit and no runs allowed in his first career win. Drew Sheridan went 1.2 innings with three hits and one run along with a strikeout. Bobby Streisel struck out the only batter he faced in the top of the eighth. Michael Gilmartin recorded his second save of the season with one hit, one run and one strikeout in the ninth.
Gardner-Webb starter Mike Lewis went 5.1 innings with eight hits, seven runs and four strikeouts. Jeremy Freeman allowed a hit and a run, while Adam Izokovic (0-1) allowed three runs and two hits. Jake Watts went the final 2.2 innings and allowed one hit and one run with two strikeouts.
It was the first meeting of Wofford and Gardner-Webb since 1995 and the first with both schools as members of NCAA Division I. Konstantine Diamaduros saw a ten-game hitting streak to begin the season come to an end, however he did have an RBI. Wofford has won back-to-back games for the first time this season. Michael Gilmartin now has 14 career saves, second most in school history.
The five errors on the night were the most in a game this season. The Terriers were averaging one error a game before tonight. Wofford and Gardner-Webb each had twelve hits in the game. The Runnin’ Bulldogs stranded eleven runners, while Wofford left only five on base.
Wofford will then travel to South Carolina for a game Wednesday night at 7:00 pm at Carolina Stadium. Wofford will host Fordham for a four-game series beginning on Friday night.
