Boone, N.C.- The Wofford women’s tennis team nearly escaped the mountains of North Carolina on Tuesday afternoon with a Southern Conference victory but the Terriers came up just short as the Mountaineers of Appalachian State defeated Wofford 4-3 in Boone.
Following up to its great doubles play on Monday, Wofford (2-11, 1-5 SoCon) continued to play solid doubles and took the early 1-0 match lead by winning two out of three doubles matches. Haley Baird and Sabrina Smyers picked up an 8-5 win on court No. 2 over Lindsay King and Blakeley Bean while Cayley Wetzig and Ashley Lawrence clinched the doubles point for the Terriers as they held off Gisela Fernandez and Olivia Stannard of the Mountaineers (6-10, 1-2 SoCon) 9-7 on court No. 1.
Leading 1-0 heading into singles play, the Terriers needed to split the six singles matches to take the match but was only able to prevail in two. Wetzig used a single service break in each set to dispatch of Amanda Cash on court No. 1 6-3, 6-3. On court No. 5, Sonia Anand battled out an injury to pick up the second Terrier singles victory of the day as she won 6-4, 6-1.
Baird nearly escaped with a victory on court No. 3 but she was downed by King in an exhilarating three set match by a score of 3-6, 6-4, and 7-6 (1).
The Terriers will return to the friendly confines of the Reeves Tennis Center on Friday afternoon at 3 p.m. as they play host to the College of Charleston Cougars.
