FLORENCE, S.C. – The Terrier men’s golf team continued to improve on the third and final day of the 2009 Southern Conference Championship, claiming fifth place.

Wofford combined for a team score of 286 in the third round, its best of the tournament. Senior Drew Perry again led the Terriers with his second three-under round of the tournament, using the score of 69 to claim a share of eighth place individually, his third top-ten finish of the season. Perry recorded a score of 214 (-2) for the tournament, his lowest 54-hole score of the season.

Also finishing in the top 15 for the Terriers was senior Neil O’Brian, who claimed a share of 13th place by carding a 70 in the third round for a tournament total of 217. Rounding out the Terrier top twenty-five finishes was junior Garrett Medeiros, finishing 23rd with a score of 221. Medeiros recorded an even par score of 72 in the third round.

Also helping the Terriers were brothers Brent and Kirk Whitehead, who shot 75 and 77, respectively, in the third round. Wofford finished seven strokes behind fourth-place Furman, while finishing ahead of Elon, Davidson, UNC Greensboro, College of Charleston, Samford, and Appalachian State.

After entering the final three holes tied at 12-under par, Chattanooga shot even par over the closing stretch to edge Georgia Southern by two strokes and win the 2009 Southern Conference Men’s Golf Championship.

Georgia Southern’s Drew Lethem (-6), who followed a tournament-low 66 in round one with back-to-back even par 72s, claimed individual medalist honors and his first career collegiate title. Lethem narrowly topped Tanner Briele (-5) of Western Carolina and Fredrik Qvicker (-5) of Chattanooga.

The victory is Chattanooga’s third consecutive SoCon title, all of which have come at the par 72, 7,062-yard Country Club of South Carolina. With the win, the Mocs earn the league’s automatic bid to the NCAA Regionals, which run from May 14-16.
