SPARTANBURG, S.C.- The Wofford women’s tennis team was downed by the visiting College of Charleston Cougars on Friday afternoon at the Reeves Tennis Center by a 7-0 margin. The Cougars improve to 18-3 overall and 6-0 in league play while the Terriers fall to 2-12 overall and 1-6 in the Southern Conference.
College of Charleston opened with a 1-0 lead heading into singles play as they were able to win two out of three doubles matches. Haley Baird and Sabrina Smyers were defeated by Laura Borza and Anna Lee Evans on court No. 1 while the Terrier duo of Sonia Anand and Betsy Hauer were defeated by Caroline Newman and Amanda Schwarz.
Playing for their first time together this season, Cayley Wetzig and Kristin Demosthenes were able to hold off the Cougar pair of Keely Mulligan and Kinsey Casey on court No. 2 by a score on 8-7 (3).
In singles play, the Terriers were unable to pick up a victory as College of Charleston took all six matches in straight sets. Wetzig played a tough match on court one but was eventually downed by Borza 6-4, 6-4. Demosthenes also put up a good fight for the Terriers on court No. 6 but she was downed by Nina Burgoon 7-6(4), 6-0.
The Terriers return to action on Saturday as they travel to Greensboro, N.C. to take on the UNCG Spartans. Match time is slated to begin at noon.
