Men's Soccer Opens Season With 2-2 Tie

JOHNSON CITY, Tenn.  – The Wofford men's soccer team tied East Tennessee State 2-2 Tuesday night in the season opener at Summers-Taylor Stadium. The Terriers had a 2-0 lead in the second half, but two quick goals by the Bucs tied the game.

The game was tight in the first half as both team had several scoring opportunities, but neither team could convert on their chances as the game remained scoreless at the half. The Terriers outshot the Bucs 8-6 in the half, while ETSU had a 4-2 advantage in corners.

In the 58th minute, Wofford took a 1-0 lead as Moe Kelli intercepted a Buccaneer pass in front of the ETSU goal and fired a shot into the back of the net. The Terriers didn’t waste anytime adding to their lead as Yakov Rubinchik found a wide open Alex Hutchins who beat the ETSU keeper to make the score 2-0 Wofford in the 62nd minute.

The Bucs missed out on a couple chances later in the half, but were finally able to get on the board in the 73rd minute as Conrad McCue knocked home the rebound from a Jaron Westbrook shot to cut the Terrier lead to 2-1.

ETSU got the equalizer in the 77th minute as Sean Hoek got to a loose ball in front of the Wofford net and placed the ball between the Terrier keeper and the far post to make the score 2-all.

The game remained 2-2 at the end of regulation sending the game into overtime. In the first overtime, the Bucs outshot Wofford 2-0, but could not get the game winner.

Late in the second overtime, the Terriers went a man down after Paulo Bonfim picked up his second yellow card of the match. ETSU put some pressure on the Terrier defense firing a couple shots late in the period, but the game ended in a 2-2 tie.

ETSU out shot Wofford 25-12 in the match, while both teams had six corners a piece. Scott Rosman had four saves in goal for the Buccaneers and Thomas Hunter had a career-high ten saves for the Terriers.
