SPARTANBURG, S.C. – The Wofford volleyball team defeated Southern Wesleyan in three sets in its first match of a three-game home stand.
After a set-opening kill by Southern Wesleyan, the Terriers tied the score at 1-1 and took a quick 4-1 lead. Wofford would not trail again as the Terriers took the first set 25-15. The second set was much of the same, with the Warriors earning the first point and the Terriers responding immediately with a side out. Wofford’s strong offense helped the Terriers to a 25-12 win in the second set.
Southern Wesleyan responded in the third set to take a slightly larger 3-1 lead to open the set, but Wofford again responded to tie the score at three and take over the lead. After a tied score at six, the Terriers rallied behind the serve of Catelyn Amende to go on a 7-0 run. Similar spurts from Joanna Sudduth and Shanna Hughes helped the Terriers to a 25-11 win in the third and final set.
Junior Katelyn Barnes led the Warriors with seven kills in the match, while libero Keni Abercrombie led the defense with a match-high 16 digs.
Freshman Arden Anderson and junior Catelyn Amende each recorded 11 kills in the win. Setter Joanna Suddath notched a double-double with 33 assists and 10 digs, while libero Sarah Palmer led the floor defense with 14 digs. The Terriers recorded six team blocks and 45 total kills in the match.
With the win, Wofford improves to 13-2 on the season and extends its winning streak to 12 matches. Southern Wesleyan falls to 3-8 overall. The Terriers will open Southern Conference play Friday as they host Georgia Southern in a 7:00 pm matchup.
