Men's Soccer ties UNC Asheville 0-0

SPARTANBURG, S.C. – The Wofford Men’s Soccer team dominated the pace of play however settled for a 0-0 tie with UNC Asheville Monday evening in the home opener of the 2009 season at Snyder Field. The Terriers had a commanding lead on shots 26 to five through the game.

Wofford moves to 0-0-2 while UNC Asheville goes to 1-1-1. Andrew Eppelsheimer led the Terriers with 6 shots while Yakov Rubinchik added 5 shots.

The Terriers had control of the game early as they recorded the first four shots of the game in the opening ten minutes. On a cross into the box, the Bulldogs were called for a handball, resulting in a penalty kick for Wofford. Armin Kinigadner took the shot and went to the left, but Derrick Filip made the save at the 20:47 mark.

Wofford continued to control the ball in the first half, as the Terriers had nine shots to the Bulldogs three.

In the second half, Wofford dominated play with twelve shots in the period to UNC Asheville’s one. At 66:27 in the game, Yakov Rubinchik chipped a ball in from 15 yards out to the top right corner, but Derrick Filip got a glove on the ball to push it away. The Terriers had six more shots in the final ten minutes of regulation, but all were wide.

In the first overtime period, Kentrel Owens had a shot from ten yards out saved and the rebound shot by Alex Hutchins went wide just 35 seconds into play. With ninety second left in the first overtime, Nick Schuermann had a header go wide right by about three inches. As the teams went to the second overtime, Wofford had another chance at 105:45 when Kentrel Owens had a header that went just a foot over the crossbar. The Bulldogs had their only shot on goal in either overtime at 107:52 when Jake Sides had a header off a corner kick that was saved by Thomas Hunter.

For the game, Wofford had 26 shots to UNC Asheville’s five. Wofford goalie Thomas Hunter made three saves in the tie, while Derrick Filip had ten saves for the Bulldogs. The Terriers had 14 corner kicks to five for the Bulldogs. UNC Asheville had ten fouls to Wofford’s eight, and there were no cards issued.

Wofford will play away this Friday against USC Upstate at 7:00 pm. On Sunday, the Men’s and Women’s Soccer will host a double header starting at 1:30 pm.
