Terriers Close Out Weekend in Charleston, Losing 1-0 to the Cougars

Box Score Game Stats

CHARLESTON, S.C. – The women’s soccer team continued their tour of Charleston Sunday afternoon, playing College of Charleston. The Cougars struck early with a goal in the fourth minute and the Terriers were unable to bounce back from the one goal deficit, losing 1-0. Charleston improve to 8-9-1 (5-4-1 SoCon), while the Terriers fall to a 6-7-4 regular season record, with a 1-5-4 standing in the Southern Conference.

The Terriers slipped to a one goal disadvantage early in the match, giving up a goal in the first four minutes of the game. CoC’s Hope Atkinson took control of the ball close to 25 feet outside of the goal, and ripped a shot to the upper corner of the Wofford goal, just out of reach of Terrier goalkeeper, Kimberly Cohn’s fingers. The score gave Atkinson her sixth goal of the season and put the Cougars up 1-0 at the 4:40 mark.

The Cougars continued applying pressure to the Wofford goal, searching for their second goal and putting three more attempts toward the Terrier frame throughout the next three minutes of play. Each attempt missed their mark with the first shot being blocked, the second sailing wide and the last being saved by Cohn.

The Terriers returned the Cougar’s threats with a counter-attack in the 35th minute. Rachael Blackburn fired a shot toward the Charleston frame, but CoC’s Katie Tate was there to make the save. The Cougar defense had an efficient first half, holding Wofford to one shot during the 45 minutes.

Entering halftime, the Terriers trailed Charleston 1-0.

Starting the second half, each team shared offensive attacks early in the period, pressing opportunities toward the opposition’s goals. Blackburn created another chance to get on the board, streaming a shot in the first minute of the half. Her shot forced Tate to make a crucial save to keep the Terriers away from the equalizing score.

Charleston mirrored Blackburn’s attack with a couple of their own in the 50th minute. Atkinson nearly got her second, nicking the crossbar on a shot and her teammate Lindsay Frey pushed another shot toward the net, but Cohn was able to pick up the save.

College of Charleston took control of the match in the second half, only allowing one other shot in the duration of the last 45 minutes by Maggie McLaughlin. Neither team put any other scores on the board, ending the match 1-0.

Rachael was the most productive athlete offensively with two shots and both her shots being on target. Cohn posted good numbers despite the one goal allowed, accounting for five saves.

The women’s soccer program regular season is coming to an end, with their last match being this Wednesday, October 27th against conference rivals Furman. The match is set to start at 7:00pm on Snyder Field. Be sure to come out to support your Terriers as we celebrate Senior Night.
