Clemson Scrambles to Draw Even with the Terriers, 2-2

CLEMSON, S.C. – The Terriers traveled to Historic Riggs Field Wednesday night to face non-conference competition, Clemson. Wilson Hood helped take the Terriers to an early one goal lead in the 13th minute. Clemson answered before halftime, tying the match, but Wofford’s Armin Kinigadner knocked in the go-ahead goal 10 minutes into the second half making the game 2-1. Clemson’s K.C. Onyeador was able to score the equalizer for the Tigers, sending the game into overtime. Neither team was able to score in the double overtime periods, ending the match 2-2. Coach Polson’s program goes to 2-9-3 on the year and the Tigers push their regular season record to 4-7-4.

Wofford struck first at the 13:51 mark. Wilson Hood pushed the ball in past Clemson goalkeeper, J.D. Spearman, giving the senior his fifth score of the season. Hood scored off a set-up from Billy Padula, marking the freshman defender’s second assist of the season.

The Terriers were able to hold on to the one goal advantage for 25 minutes, until Clemson’s Tommy Drake scored the tying goal at the 38:35 mark. Drake was able to knock the shot in from assists by teammates Bo Godwin and Austin Savage.

The two programs went into the locker rooms even at a 1-1 draw. Both teams shared four shots each in the first half. Clemson took the advantage in corner kicks after the first 45, having five corners compared to Wofford’s two.

Armin Kinigadner began the second half by giving the Terriers the score to take the lead to 2-1. Kinigadner streamed a shot in unassisted for his second score of the year. Wofford took the lead for the second time in the game, making the match 2-1.

Clemson was able to steal the momentum back, scoring the equalizer in the 74th minute. Clemson’s K.C. Onyeador pressed a ball past Wofford keeper, Andrew Drennan, giving the Tiger his fourth goal of the season. Onyeador scored off an assist from teammate Keegan Priest. Onyeador’s equalizer tied the match 2-2, sending the game into overtime at the end of regulation.

Despite shots by Nick Orton and Logan Threadgill, the Terriers were unable to score the game-winner in the overtime periods. Drennan grabbed a save in each overtime to keep the Tigers off the board. The match ended after the 20 minute periods, 2-2. Drennan had six total saves in the match.

The team totaled 12 shots and were led in shots by Hood, Andrew Eppelsheimer and Eddie Nam with two shots apiece. The Terriers were able to put five shots on target.

Wofford will travel to UNC Asheville for their final non-conference match before returning home for the last time to face Furman. The Asheville match-up will be this Saturday, October 30th at 2:00pm.
