CHARLESTON, S.C. – After taking an early one goal lead in the first half, Wofford men’s soccer was unable to hold on for the win, giving up a goal minutes before the first half was called and three others in the second half. When time ran out at the end of the conference opener, the final result was 1-4. Coach Polson’s program falls to 1-5-2 on the season and records a 0-1 standing in the Southern Conference. College of Charleston continues their win streak and advances to 7-2-1, with a 2-0 record in the Southern Conference.
Wilson Hood put the first marks on the board, scoring in the 19th minute. The goal accounts for his third score of the year, making the senior forward the leading goal-scorer on the team. Armin Kinigadner set up the goal, taking advantage of a free kick awarded from about 40 yards back to the right side of the field. He sent the ball flying into the box where it found the head of Hood, who pushed the ball past CoC’s goalkeeper, Kees Heemskerek. Kinigadner leads the team in assists, tallying his fifth on the year as the Terriers took a one goal lead early in the match.
Wofford nearly took a two goal advantage in the 35th minute, pairing a string of attacks toward the Cougar net. Kinigadner and Andrew Eppelsheimer fired shots toward the net, only to have their shots blocked by opposing defenders.
With only a minute and 45 seconds remaining in the half, Charleston struck the equalizer goal in. CoC’s Sean Flatley headed a ball into the side netting of the far post off a cross from Jake Helmig. Entering halftime, the score drew even at 1-1.
The second half proved productive for the Cougars as they tagged on three more scores throughout the 45 minute period. Nearly six minutes into the second half, Flately racked up his second score of the evening, heading a ball in off a corner. Sean De Silva was awarded the assist as he set up the goal from a corner kick.
Goalkeeper Andrew Drennan was substituted in the 68th minute, allowing Ben Limbaugh to grab his first regular season field experience. Drennan totaled six crucial saves with his time in the net, helping keep the match close.
Near the 80th minute, Charleston took a three goal lead off a score from Kareem Yearwood. Ralph Lundy pushed a through ball past the defense, hitting Yearwood on a breakaway for the goal. The Cougars sealed the game in the last three minutes from an unassisted goal by Lundy from about a yard outside the 18’ box.
Hood led the team in shots (4) and shots on frame (3). He had the lone goal of the night for the Terriers. Kinigadner, Paulo Bonfim and Eppelsheimer each had two shots each, while Dennis Moore and Kentrel Owens had one attempt each. The Drennan-Limbaugh combination totaled eight saves throughout the game.
The Terriers continue conference play with a match up this Friday, October 8th against Davidson. The match will take place on Snyder Field at 8:00 pm.
