DAVIDSON, N.C. – The Wofford College baseball team split a doubleheader with Davidson on Saturday afternoon at Wilson Field. The Terriers gave up four home runs in the first game as Davidson won 13-5. In the second game Wofford answered with 14 hits, including three home runs, on the way to a 15-8 victory.
Wofford is 6-7 on the season, while Davidson is 10-5. It was the Southern Conference opener for both teams, who are each 1-1 in league play.
In the first game, Wofford had the first hit of the day in the top of the second on a double by Mac Doyle. Davidson was able to get on the scoreboard first with a solo home run by Danny Weiss to right center to lead off the bottom of the second. In the bottom of the third, the Wildcats added to the advantage with a two-run homer by Sam Payne. Drew Gadaire doubled and moved to third on a wild pitch. A single by Danny Weiss scored Gadaire, while another single by Andrew Barna scored Weiss for a 5-1 lead.
The Terriers got one run back on a solo home run by Mac Doyle to left center in the top of the fourth for a 5-1 score. In the bottom of the fourth, an RBI single by Sam Payne drove in Michael Zeblo, who had reached on a walk, for a 6-1 lead.
In the top of the fifth, Josh McKinney reached on a single, but was left on base. The Wildcats added two more runs in the bottom of the fifth on a home run by Danny Weiss to center for an 8-1 advantage. Danny Zeblo hit a grand slam in the bottom of the fifth as Davidson stretched the lead to 12-1.
Wofford added a run in the top of the sixth when Mac Doyle grounded out to score Alex Lee, who had reached on a single. Davidson matched the run in the bottom of the sixth with an RBI single from Tommy Piacenza to make it a 13-2 game.
After a scoreless seventh, Wofford got the bats going in the top of the eighth with back-to-back singles from Alex Lee and Kyle Behrendt. Mac Doyle then doubled to score one run. Taylor Rozier grounded out to score Behrendt and a sacrifice fly by Landon Bennett scored Doyle for a 13-5 score. The Terriers had two hits in the top of the ninth, but were unable to add any runs and the final was 13-5.
Wofford starter John Cornely (1-2) threw four innings with seven hits and eight runs allowed along with eight strikeouts. Tom Dolinak went a third of an inning with two hits and four runs allowed, plus a strikeout. Brandon Yarusi went the final 3.2 innings with four hits and one run allowed and four strikeouts.
Davidson starter Thomas Middour (1-1) went seven innings with nine hits and four runs allowed with seven strikeouts. Brian Russell threw the final two innings with three hits, one run allowed and a strikeout.
In the second game, the Terriers opened the scoring with a solo home run by Mac Doyle in the top of the second inning. Wofford added singles from Landon Bennett and Josh McKinney and with one out David Roney hit a home run to right center for a 4-0 lead.
Wofford added a run in the top of the third when Landon Bennett walked, moved to second and third on errors, then scored on a passed ball. In the top of the fourth, the Terriers loaded the bases with no outs before a double play. However James Foster scored one run on an error before the Terriers loaded the bases again. The Wofford half of the inning ended on a fielder’s choice and a 6-0 lead.
In the bottom of the fourth, the Wildcats got on the board with an RBI single by Matt Ray. They added another run when Tommy Piacenza was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded to make it a 6-2 game. Drew Gadaire hit an RBI double in the bottom of the fifth for the Wildcats to cut the Wofford leads to 6-3. Davidson was able to make it a 6-4 game after a sacrifice fly in the bottom of the sixth by Tommy Piacenza to score Matt Ray who reached on a double.
The Terriers had singles from Konstantine Diamaduros and David Roney in the top of the seventh. A double by Matt Moore scored Diamaduros and a single by Alex Lee scored Roney and Moore. With two outs, Kyle Behrendt blasted a ball over the right field fence to score two more runs and an 11-4 lead.
Davidson responded by loading the bases with no outs in the bottom of the seventh. Danny Weiss reached on a fielder’s choice to score one run, then Andrew Barna hit a three-run homer to make it an 11-8 game. With the bases loaded, a ground out ended the inning for the Wildcats.
In the top of the eighth, David Roney walked and Matt Moore singled. With two out, James Foster hit a single to score Roney. Alex Lee loaded the bases after being hit by a pitch. Kyle Behrendt hit a ball to left field and reached on an error that scored three runs as the Terriers took a 15-8 lead.
The Wildcats left one runner on base in the bottom of the eighth, while the Terriers left one on in the top of the ninth after Konstantine Diamaduros doubled. Drew Sheridan struck out the side in the bottom of the ninth to give the Terriers the 15-8 victory.
Wofford starter J.D. Osborne (2-0) threw five innings and allowed two hits, three runs with five strikeouts. Ryan Traylor recorded one out in the sixth and allowed one hit. Cash Collins threw an inning and allowed four runs on three hits. Bobby Streisel went a third of an inning with one hit allowed. Drew Sheridan threw the final 2.1 innings with one hit allowed and five strikeouts.
For Davidson, the Wildcats used seven pitchers in the game. Starter Chris Lamb (1-2) went only two innings and gave up four hits and four runs with three strikeouts. Ian Horkley threw 1.2 innings and allowed one hit and two runs to score along with four walks. Mike Frongello went 2.2 innings with three hits and two runs allowed. Matt Sliwiak threw two thirds of an inning and allowed three runs on three hits with one strikeout. Mac Hunter and Andy Bass combined to go an inning and allow four runs on two hits. Michael Loeb pitched the ninth and allowed one hit with one strikeout.
Wofford and Davidson will complete the three game series on Sunday at 1:00 p.m.
