Men’s Soccer Wraps Up Tournament With 0-1 Loss In Double Overtime

Conway, S.C. - Coach Polson’s team finished the Coastal Carolina/adidas Invitational this evening with a 0-1 defeat in double overtime to Coastal Carolina University. The lone CCU goal came in the final minute of the 110 minute regulation. The Terriers fall to 0-3-1 on the season and the Chanticleers improve to 2-2.

The match seemed to be a dead-even matchup during the 90 minutes of regulation. The Terriers and Chanticleers both shared nine shots during the match, with Wofford taking a slim advantage with four shots on goal compared to CCU’s three. The Coastal Carolina team did lead with four corner kicks, with Wofford narrowly trailing with three.

The Terriers had opportunities to win the game, with their best chance coming in the second overtime with a blistering shot from Wilson Hood that was narrowly saved by CCU’s Scott Angevine.

Andrew Drennan had a solid game with two saves during the match. He secured a crucial save in the last 23 minutes of play. Drennan kept the contest scoreless after saving a header off a free kick taken by CCU’s Justin Portillo.

The Chanticleers put the capitalizing goal in at the 109:02 mark in the second overtime. The goal came from a header by Ross Kelly, with Justin Portillo picking up the assist.

Armin Kinigadner led the team in shots with three, while Hood and Bryan Eddy had two apiece. Billy Padula and Blake Gardner were able to put one shot toward the goal each. Eddy led the team with shots on goal, having two attempts on frame.

The match against CCU was the second and final game of the Invitational for the men’s soccer program. After playing two games through the weekend, two Terrier players were named to the all-tournament team. Billy Padula and Andrew Eppelsheimer were honored as two of the best players throughout tournament play.
