Asheville, N.C. - The women’s soccer team won their second straight, with a victory on the road against UNC Asheville. After the Bulldogs took a 2-1 lead in the second half, the Terriers rallied together to score two late goals with 15 minutes left in the match. The final after regulation was a 3-2 result, improving Wofford to a 4-2 record on the season. The Bulldogs drop to 0-5 on the year.
The women’s squad flew out of the gates early, with the first goal being scored in the first 58 seconds of play by freshman sensation, Emily Bougas. The score gives Bougas four goals total on the season.
Wofford kept applying pressure to the UNC Asheville goal with shots from Anne Phillips and Alex Kachulis throughout the next ten minutes of play, but both attempts sailed wide.
In the 28th minute, Wofford goalkeeper Erika Christensen made a critical save against a shot from Leilani Halkiotis. Asheville’s goalkeeper returned the favor with a save of her own against a shot bulleted from Nikki Siebert a couple minutes later.
With five minutes left in the first half, the Bulldog’s Chole McCleary-Small slipped a goal in with an assist by Lelani Halkiotis.
Siebert nearly put a go-ahead goal in with 22 seconds to spare before the halftime whistle, but Megan Dent saved the attempt.
At the end of the first half, Wofford accounted for sevent shots and two corner kicks. Christen was able to save three Bulldog shots in the first half.
Starting the second half, the Bulldog’s took a quick offensive advantage, with a pair of shots and corners attempted in the first five minutes of play. Eventually Halkiotis pushed a shot in, taking a 2-1 lead over the Terriers.
The women’s team was able to steal the momentum back in the 71st minute with the equalizing goal from midfielder Alex Kachulis. The goal came from a corner kick taken by Jewel Kawamoto. The header gave the freshman her second goal of the year and Kawamoto her first assist on the season.
Four minutes later, Megan Wellborn rebounded a ball that was trickling around the 6' box into the back of the net. The finish was set up by a well-placed corner kick from Kawamoto. The finish gives Wellborn her first game-winning goal of her career.
The Bulldogs attempted to tie the game up in the last ten minutes of play on a couple of occasions, but the Terrier defense and Christensen held strong for the 3-2 win.
Wofford tallied 14 shots throughout the afternoon. Ten of the shots were on frame, giving the Terriers a 71 percent shots on goal average. The final two goals came from corner kicks by Kawamoto, but only one counted as an assist. Siebert led the team in shots (3) and shots on goal (3), and four different Terriers accounted for two shots apiece (Wellborn, Kachulis, Bougas, and Maggie O’Brien). Christensen totaled for four saves in the match.
The women’s soccer teams looks for their third straight win next Sunday, Sept. 19, against Converse College. The match will start at 2:00 pm at home on Snyder Field.
