Women’s Soccer Drops Conference Opener to Georgia Southern

Box Score Game Stats

STATESBORO, Ga. – The women’s soccer program lost their conference debut on the road to Georgia Southern University, 3-0 Friday afternoon. Georgia Southern put three goals on the scoreboard quickly, taking the three goal advantage in the first 21 minutes, and the Terriers were unable to come back for the victory, taking their first loss in four matches. The defeat gives Coach Kiah’s squad their third loss of the season, dropping them to 5-3 on the regular season and 0-1 in Southern Conference play. The Eagles improve to 4-4, with a 1-0 record in the Southern Conference.

The Eagles took a quick lead, scoring in the first three minutes of the match. Georgia Southern’s Sara Oland posted her fifth goal of the season, knocking in a shot over Wofford keeper Katie McChesney’s head from an assist by Carlee Storey.

Sydney Reed almost headed in the equalizer in the 5th minute, from a corner kick taken by Erin Stephenson, but the headed ball skimmed wide of the goal. Two minutes later the Eagles took a two goal lead, after taking advantage of a free kick awarded from around 35 yards from the goal. GSU’s Paige Grant bounced the free kick attempt in at the 7:36 mark, giving Georgia Southern a 2-0 lead.

In the 23rd minute, the Eagles widened the gap with the third and final goal of the afternoon, taking a 3-0 lead. GSU’s Sara Oland scored her sixth goal of the season after taking advantage of a ball from a Wofford defender and aiming the ball into the upper-left corner from outside the box.

After the third goal, Coach Kiah made a few personnel changes, to try and get back in the game, substituting in Jewel Kawamoto, Amanda Morris, Emily Bougas, Daniella Fatti and Ellen Ezekiel. Coach Kiah also opted to give Kimberly Cohn some field experience at the net, subbing out McChesney. Cohn took advantage of her time on the pitch, grabbing four saves throughout the rest of the game and helping keep the Eagles from scoring another. Bougas also posted positive numbers coming off the bench, taking two shots and having them both on frame.

The Terriers were able to outshoot the Eagles, taking eleven shots to their seven and had better numbers in the corner kick categories as well, taking five corner kicks, compared to GSU’s zero. Fatti lead the team in shots with three, while Bougas and Nikki Siebert shared two apiece.

The women’s soccer team continues conference play this weekend, traveling to Davidson to face the Wildcats, Sunday, September 26th at 2:00pm.
