ROCK HILL, S.C. – The Terrier women’s tennis team opened the 2011 season in Rock Hill, S.C. Saturday afternoon against the Winthrop Eagles. The match was the season opener for both programs and the Eagles were able to grab a victory over the Terriers, 5-2. The victory gives Winthrop their first win and puts Wofford at 0-1 after their season debut.

Wofford’s two points came from two newcomers, Sarah Evans and Emilia “Frenchie” Milovanovic. Both players played in their first match as a Terrier and started their careers with a victory. Milovanovic started at the No. 1 position, taking on Winthrop’s Yasmine Alkema. Milovanovic, a senior transfer from USC Upstate, easily won the first set only giving up one game to Alkema. Alkema was able to win the second set 3-6, sending the match into a super tie-breaker. After very tight play from both players, Milovanovic grabbed a 13-11 win in the tie-breaker, giving the Terriers their first point.

Freshman Sarah Evans won in the same fashion at the No. 4 spot, beating her opposition Andressa Garcia in a super tie-breaker. Both players traded sets at 6-3 to send the game to the tie-breaker, but Evans was able to edge out the Eagle 10-8 to give Evans her first win as a Terrier.

The Eagles would go on to win the other four singles matches and also grabbed the doubles point after winning every doubles match.

“We lost to a very strong team today. Our girls competed hard”, commented Coach Hangstefer after the match. “Emilia and Sarah had great wins and it was exciting to see both of them pull out close matches. I’m really excited to see what the rest of the season holds for us.”
