Terriers Drop 2-1 Decision to No. 19 Coastal Carolina Tuesday Evening

Box Score Box Score: No. 19 Coastal Carolina, Wofford 1

SPARTANBURG, S.C – Two first half goals by Coastal Carolina and a steady rain did not play in favor of the Wofford men’s soccer team Tuesday evening, as the Terriers took a 2-1 loss from the 19th-ranked Chanticleers at Snyder Field.  With the loss, Wofford drops to 4-9-1 overall on the season.

Coastal Carolina posted the first score in the 28th minute of play as Ricky Garbanzo sent a shot from eight yards out into the right side of the net past Wofford goalkeeper Andrew Drennan.  Henrik Robstad was credited with the assist.

A foul in the 18-yard box by Forrest Lasso in the 38th minute set up a penalty kick by Ashton Bennett, who was able to convert, giving the Chanticleers a 2-0 lead.

In the 70th minute of action, a yellow card was presented to Coastal Carolina goalkeeper Scott Angevine, who came out of goal in attempt to prevent a shot by Wofford’s Matt Frongello.  The Terriers were awarded a penalty kick, which was successfully taken by Alex Hutchins, cutting the Chanticleers’ lead to 2-1.

The Terriers had a handful of attempts to score the game-tying goal in the final minutes of action, as Carlos Dominguez Gonzalez was able to break free from CCU defenders in the 74th minute, but his shot attempt sailed wide right of the goal.  Dominguez Gonzalez also nearly headed the ball in during the final seconds of play, but the ball went just over the crossbar.

Wofford will begin a three-match road swing this Saturday evening, returning to Southern Conference action to take on Davidson.  The match is scheduled for a 6:00 p.m. start time.
