DAVIDSON, N.C. – The Wofford men’s soccer team fell to Davidson by a 1-0 score Saturday night at Alumni Stadium. The loss drops the Terriers to 4-10-1 overall and 0-5-0 in Southern Conference play, while the Wildcats improve to 7-6-2 overall and 2-1-1 in league play.
Both squads had moments where they nearly scored in the first half of play, as both Wofford and Davidson had two shots on goal in the first 45 minutes of play.
Wofford saw one of its best scoring attempts of the half in the 17
th minute of play when Ethan Miller crossed the ball from the left side of the field to Carlos Dominguez Gonzalez in the center of the 18-yard box. He sent a shot toward the goal, but it sailed just over the crossbar.
In the 33
rd minute of action, Chris Pettiglio headed the ball toward the goal following a Davidson free kick, but Wofford goalkeeper Andrew Drennan prevented the ball from finding the back of the net to record the save.
In the 52
nd minute of play, shortly following a Davidson corner kick, Gabe Rivera sent a shot from nearly eight yards out toward the left corner of the goal, but Drennan made the diving save to prevent the possible goal.
Drennan made another spectacular save in the 64
th minute as Thomas Zimmerman broke away from the Terrier defenders, taking a one on one shot from less than 10 yards out. Drennan made a sliding save, deflecting the ball away with his feet to keep the match scoreless.
The Wildcats took a 1-0 advantage in the 76
th minute as Andrew Dilallo headed the ball just past Drennan into the net. Hunter Hayes was credited with the assist.
The Terriers tried to produce the game-tying goal in the closing minutes, as Carlos Dominguez Gonzales, Matt Frongello, and Alex Hutchins each put shots on goal within the final 10 minutes of play, but none of the shots were able to make their way past Davidson goalkeeper Chip Sanders.
Drennan took the loss for the Terriers, tallying five saves while facing a total of 16 shots. Sanders was awarded the win for the Wildcats, racking up seven saves while facing 11 shots.
The Terriers return to action Tuesday evening, facing Appalachian State at 7:00 p.m. in Boone, N.C.
