BOONE, N.C. – A goal by Alex Hutchins in the 12
th minute play was the only goal scored Tuesday evening as the Wofford men’s soccer team took a 1-0 victory over Appalachian State. With the win, the Terriers improve to 5-10-1 overall and 1-5 in Southern Conference play, while the Mountaineer drop to 8-3-4 overall and 3-1-2 in league action.
Wofford’s win broke an 11-match unbeaten streak by Appalachian State, handing the Mountaineers their first loss since September 4
th at Mercer.
The Terriers took the early 1-0 advantage when Hutchins scored his team-leading sixth goal of the season, taking a shot from 10 yards out that went past ASU goalkeeper Collin Taylor after breaking through the middle of the field. Matt Frongello was credited with the assist.
The Mountaineers tested Wofford goalkeeper Andrew Drennan early, putting three shots on goal within the first six minutes of play, yet Drennan prevented each from finding the back of the net.
Appalachian State put one more shot on goal in the half that was saved by Drennan, while the Terriers attempted three additional shots, but none were one frame to keep the score at 1-0 at the half.
The Mountaineers went on the offensive attack early in the second half as well, sending two shots on goal within the first seven minutes, yet none were able to make their way past Drennan.
Wofford saw its first scoring opportunity of the half in the 63
rd minute when Carlos Dominguez Gonzales sent a shot sailing toward the goal, but it went just over the crossbar.
Appalachian State kept searching for the game-tying goal in the closing minutes of regulation, with three shots on goal in the final 10 minutes of the match, but Drennan kept each shot from scoring to seal the win for the Terriers.
Hutchins and Dominguez Gonzalez each put a shot on goal within the last three minutes of play, but were unable to convert.
Drennan is awarded the win for Wofford, tallying an impressive 11 saves on the evening while facing a total of 26 shots. Collin Taylor takes the loss for the Mountaineers, allowing one goal while facing six shots. Danny Free played the final three minutes in goal for ASU, earning two saves.
The Terriers will return to action this Friday evening at Furman, with the match set for a 7:00 p.m. start time.
