Late Goal Dooms Wofford, 1-0, Against Clemson Monday Night

Box Score
Box Score: Clemson 1, Wofford 0

SPARTANBURG, S.C. – A goal by Clemson’s Amadou Dia in the 75th minute was the lone score of the evening as the Wofford men’s soccer team fell to the Tigers by a 1-0 score Monday evening at Snyder Field.  With the loss, the Terriers drop to 5-12-1 on the season, while Clemson improves to 7-8-1 overall.

Dia’s goal came in the 75th minute following a crossing pass from Austin Savage from the top of the 18-yard box to the left side, where Dia sent a shot that found the top left corner of the net, just over the reach of Wofford goalkeeper Andrew Drennan.

The Terriers tried to produce the game-tying goal in the final minutes of action, as Matt Frongello sent a shot toward the goal in the 81st minute, but the ball sailed wide right.

Both teams struggled offensively during the first half of play, as neither team was able to put a shot on goal within the first 45 minutes of play.  The Terriers had a few chances in the final minutes of the half to score, as both Chase West and Quinn Hunt just missed on headers in the 38th and 39th minutes, each sending the ball just to the right of the goal.

The Tigers had chances to score in the opening minutes of the second half, putting two shots on goal, and a header by Bastien Bacro-Duverger in the 62nd minute bounced off the right goal post.

Drennan takes the loss for the Terriers, allowing one goal while earning two saves and facing a total of eight shots.  Cody Mizell is awarded the victory for Clemson, allowing no goals while facing a total of eight shots.

Prior to tonight’s match, the senior class of 2011 was honored at midfield.  Andrew Drennan, Bryan Eddy, Quinn Hunt, and Wiley Sinkus were recognized for their contributions to the Wofford men’s soccer program throughout the past four years.

Wofford will next be in action in the first round of the 2011 Southern Conference Men’s Soccer Championship, as the eighth-seeded Terriers will take on No. 1 UNC Greensboro at 7:00 p.m. Saturday evening in Greensboro, N.C.
