Terriers Lose Heartbreaker at Georgia Southern, 4-2, Friday Afternoon

STATESBORO, Ga. – Two goals in the final ten minutes by Georgia Southern doomed the Wofford men’s soccer team, as the Terriers fell to the Eagles by a 4-2 score Friday afternoon.  The loss drops Wofford to 3-7-1 on the season and 0-3 in Southern Conference play.
 
The Eagles jumped to an early 1-0 lead in the 12th minute when Luigi Clendening scored following a crossing pass into the box by Ethan LaPan.
 
With seconds left in the first half, Georgia Southern was able to add to their lead, as Ado Junuzovic was able to put the score at 2-0.  Hunter Norton was credited with the assist.
 
Wofford saw a handful of scoring opportunities within the first 45 minutes of play, as Blair Gaines, Dennis Moore, Turner Almond, and Carlos Dominguez Gonzalez each put a shot on goal, but were unable to put the ball past GSU keeper Ryan Platt.
 
The Terriers were able to get on the board just after the start of the second half, as Alex Hutchins scored his third goal of the season in the 48th minute.   Assists were awarded to Chase West and Forrest Lasso.
 
In the 63rd minute, a red card was issued to Georgia Southern’s Nick Lane, putting the Eagles a man down for the remainder of the match.
 
In the 77th minute of play, Bryan Eddy took a shot that was saved by Platt, but the rebound went right to Dennis Moore who found the back of the net to square the match at 2-2.
 
Georgia Southern answered back in the 81st minute, as Ethan LaPan was able to put the Eagles up by a 3-2 score.
 
The final goal of the contest was scored in the 90th minute as Luigi Clendening was able to score from six yards out, putting the score at 4-2 in GSU’s favor.
 
Wofford provided one of its most offensive outputs of the 2011 season Friday afternoon, taking 22 shots with 11 being on goal.  Dennis Moore led the way for the Terriers, putting two shots on goal, including the goal in the 77th minute.
 
Ben Limbaugh took the loss for Wofford, allowing two goals while picking up one save while playing the entire second half in goal.  Starting goalkeeper Andrew Drennan allowed two goals while earning two saves for the Terriers.  Ryan Platt was awarded the win for Georgia Southern, allowing two goals while tallying nine saves.
 
The Terriers will return to action Tuesday evening, hosting Liberty.  The match is slated for a 6:00 p.m. start time at Snyder Field.
