GREENSBORO, N.C. – The 2011 season for the Wofford men’s soccer team came to an end Saturday night, as the No. 8 Terriers fell to No. 1 UNC Greensboro by a 1-0 score in the first round of the 2011 Southern Conference Men’s Soccer Championship. With the loss, Wofford finishes the season with an overall record of 5-13-1.
The Spartans scored the lone goal in the 28
th minute when David Reittinger sent a shot from 20 yards out that made its way in just under the crossbar and over the reach of Wofford goalkeeper Andrew Drennan.
The Terriers nearly answered back in the 30
th minute when Chase West broke away from a Spartan defender, sending a shot from the left side of the field that sailed over the goal.
West nearly tied the match shortly after the start of the second half, as he headed the ball off of the right goal post following a crossing pass from Ethan Miller in the 49
th minute of play.
Carlos Dominguez Gonzalez nearly produced the game-tying goal with 30 seconds remaining, but was denied by UNCG goalkeeper Peyton Ford.
While the Terriers were outshot by UNCG by a 12-5 margin during the first half, Wofford made adjustments at the half, outshooting the Spartans in the final 45 minutes by a 8-5 margin, controlling the majority of what turned out to be a intensely physical 45 minutes of play.
Drennan made several spectacular saves throughout the match, preventing the Spartans from scoring any additional goals. The senior from Anderson, S.C. finished the match with eight saves while facing a total of 20 shots. Ford gets the win for the Spartans, earning two saves while facing 10 total shots.
