CHARLESTON, S.C. – The Wofford volleyball team’s rally fell short against the College of Charleston Cougars as they dropped a 3-0 (25-18, 25-23, 25-17) Southern Conference match Sunday afternoon in the TD Arena.
Wofford opened up the match with a 4-1 lead, before the College of Charleston tied the set at five. Wofford took an 8-6 lead on a Rachel Woodlee kill and a Wendy Burnett and Bekah Dorsey block, but two service errors around a Wofford kill made the score 9-8 Wofford. A Cougar kill and a Terrier attack error sparked a 3-0 run for the College of Charleston as they went ahead 11-9. Wofford tied the set at 11 with an Anderson kill and a Woodlee solo block, but a Cougar block and Terrier attack error gave the Cougars a 13-11 lead. Wofford again tied the set at 13 with a 2-0 run a Wofford service error and attack error gave CofC a 15-13 lead. Wofford again tied the set, this time at 15 with back-to-back Amanda Liguori kills. A Taylor Baird kill and a Cougar attack error gave the Terriers a 17-15 lead, but a service error halted the 4-0 run. With the score 17-16, CofC used two kills and block that continued a 7-0 run to take 22-17 lead. Baird ended the run with a kill to cut the lead to 22-18, but CofC closed out the set with the final three points to win the opening set 25-18. Wofford had six service errors in the set.
With the score tied at three in the second set, Anderson and Woodlee had two blocks that sparked a 4-0 Wofford run, but CofC rallied to pull within two points, 7-5. Tara Gough had an ace and Baird had a kill for the Terriers during the run. Wofford held a two-point lead, until Anderson earned a solo block and Reagan Styles had an ace to give the Terriers an 11-7 lead. CofC put together three kills to cut into the Wofford lead, and pull within one point, 11-10. Coming out of a Terrier timeout, Burnett put a kill down to end the run and gave the Terriers a 12-10 lead. With the Terriers holding a 13-11 lead, CofC rallied with a 7-0 run on seven consecutive kills to take a 18-13 lead, before a Burnett and Woodlee block ended the run. Wofford used the block to mount a 5-0 run to tie the set at 18 and force a CofC timeout. Coming out of the timeout, the Cougars won a fluke point to ignite a 3-0 run to take a 21-18 lead and force a Wofford timeout. The run ended on a Cougar hitting error following the timeout to make it 21-19. Following a CofC hitting error Woodlee aced the Cougars to pull the Terriers within one, 22-21, but back-to-back Cougar kills extended the lead to 24-21. Wofford fought off one set point on a Liguori kill and another with a Styles ace to trail by one point, 24-23, but couldn’t even the set as they fell 25-23. Wofford limited its errors in the set but forced CofC into 11 hitting errors, two service errors, one blocking error and four reception errors.
College of Charleston opened the third set with a 4-1 run, and pulled ahead 7-2. Wofford couldn’t cut into the lead, as the Cougars pulled away with a seven-point lead, 12-5. Wofford cut the lead to 13-9 on a CofC block error and kills from Woodlee and Dorsey, but the Cougars ended the run with a kill to hold a five-point lead, 14-9. Wofford would pull within four points, 15-11 on a Baird kill, but the Cougars responded with a 4-0 run to pull away with a 19-11 lead, before Liguori ended the run with a kill to make it 19-12. CofC held on to take the final set and clinch the match with a 25-17. Wofford was outhit in the set .321 to .132.
The Terriers had 13 service errors compared to four the Cougars. College of Charleston also had six aces compared to four for Wofford. The Terriers did out-block the Cougars, 8-5.
Woodlee paced the Terriers offensively with ten kills, while Liguori added seven kills. Bekah Dorsey handed out 24 assists. Woodlee also led the Terriers with five total blocks, two solo blocks and three block assists.
With the loss, the Terriers slip to 13-18 overall and 2-12 in the Southern Conference. The loss also ends the Terriers chances at the SoCon Tournament.
The Terriers will have six days off before returning to action against Georgia Southern Saturday at 6 p.m. at Converse College due to the presidential debate being hosted in the Benjamin Johnson Arena. The Terriers fell 3-1 to the Eagles in the opening meeting between the two teams this season.
