Terriers’ Comeback Falls Short in Match against South Carolina State, 4-3

SPARTANBURG, SC – A late surge by the Terriers in the latter part of the women’s tennis match was cut short by South Carolina State’s Laura Bosneag. Bosneag won her match at the No. 6 spot, securing the win for the Bulldogs. The Wofford rally was set up by singles wins from Sarah Evans and Guinn Garcia after the Terriers lost the doubles point. Coach Hangstefer’s team drops to a 5-3 record, while the Bulldogs improve to 3-2.

South Carolina State grabbed the advantage early after winning every doubles match. Haley Baird and Guinn Garcia were beat 8-1 by SC State’s Maria Craciun and Daria Sekerina. Sarah Evans and Julia Paulson were defeated at the No. 2 slot by Suhaila Jad and Sabrina Mendez, 8-6, and SC State’s Laura Bosneag and Akilah James beat Emilia “Frenchie” Milovanovic and Samantha Sullivan, 8-5, at the No. 3 position.

In singles, Evans posted the Terriers first point after breezing by Craciun in straight sets, 6-2, 6-2. The Bulldogs took the lead again after SC State’s James defeated Baird 6-2, 6-2 at the No. 3 slot. Paulson also lost her match to Mendez 6-2, 6-2 at the No. 5 spot.

With three players remaining, and the Bulldogs with a 3-1 lead, the Terriers had to win each remaining match in order to grab the victory. Garcia rallied back from a 2-6 loss in the first set of her match. She split the second set with Jad, beating the Bulldog 6-3 and giving the Terriers new momentum. After trailing four games, Garcia grabbed a 6-4 victory in the third set to give the Terriers their second point.

Milovanovic was leading her match at the No. 1 spot giving the Terriers a chance, but SC State’s Bosneag was able to defeat Stephanie Cox at the No. 6 position to give the Bulldogs the fourth point and the win. Bosneag beat Cox 6-3, 6-1.

Milovanovic split her first two sets with Sekerina 6-7 and 7-6 at the No. 1 spot and took a 3-0 lead in the third set before Sekerina was forced to retire due to injury. The win gave the Terriers their third point, but the Bulldogs had already won the match 4-3.
